Amazon Cognito
If you're already using AWS, there's no reason why you should implement your own password authentication or OAuth flows when you can use Cognito instead. It solves that work for you astoundingly well. You might be tempted by a tool like Okta for OAuth flows, but unless you already have a hard dependency on it then you should go with Cognito instead. It's much lighter weight, and it's much more pleasant to extend it with lambdas.
If you don't have any AWS in your stack, or it's very very important to you to stay platform-independent for your login flows, then those are reasons to avoid Cognito.

The Okta Identity Cloud worked great for password management and centralization. It was very easy for everyone in the organization, both technical and non-technical, to get it setup and use it. It is widely used by both small and large organizations alike, and is a very trusted option for identity management. However, while The Okta Identity Cloud is effective, I've found LastPass, to be cheaper and easier to use, and performs the same functionality.

- Okta handles lockouts and password changes very seamlessly. Most end users no longer have to contact our IT department to reset their password or unlock their account.
- Okta does MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) very well with the use of their own app, Okta Verify. We utilize this for VPN connections and having MFA or 2FA has strengthened the security of our internal network.
- Okta's administration GUI is easy to use, and easy to set up. Adding applications to the organization is easy and requires very little work to deploy.
- Users can utilize Okta to store passwords securely and safe on their own account. They also can one click login to personal sites if they use Okta to store their password.
- Okta's support system is very knowledgeable and quick to respond to issues. We've had a few cases that were resolved within hours and that helps immensely when working with end users.

Amazon Cognito
- As such I do not find any major things as cons. However they can improve the documentation.
- Sometimes additional customisation increases complexity. Most of those advanced features are not used frequently.

- Session cookies have been frustrating. Rather than having an expiration date, they are activity based. Some applications will reject assertions is the Okta session is too old, so having a perpetual cookie messes things up. The option to change this is something that is desired.
- Connections to Active Directory are excellent, but there is little control over syncing. It’s either manual or every hour. Change based syncing would help simplify things.

Okta has a passion to provide secure and scalable identity solution. Their passion has come across as advocacy in a way that has deepened my knowledge of the field of authentication. I took identity for granted before but after seeing features such as external authentication I know that Okta can enable my business to reach new heights

AWS Support overall is poor. Your main resources are trainings and the docs, and the docs can be very confusing. Using Cognito well involves having a developer learn it deeply and help support your team in understanding it. That said, Cognito's competitors also have dismal support and even worse documentation, so while this isn't a strength for Cognito it may still be the frontrunner here.

Their support team has always been extremely responsive and more than willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. They've done screen shares between our help desk staff and end users to work through issues. They are quick to respond and genuinely care about getting issues resolved. Couldn't be happier.

We evaluated Microsoft Identity Manager prior to selecting The Okta Identity Cloud. We found that The Okta Identity Cloud was a more robust solution and more widely accepted with our software applications. The Okta Identity Cloud also included the provisioning and deprovisioning of user accounts more seamlessly with less human involvement. Multifactor authentication was also a bonus when comparing with other solutions that required a separate MFA solution.

Amazon Cognito
- Amazon Cognito has had a positive impact on our business by allowing us to develop services that require user sign-up and sign-in more rapidly. Not only do we not need to build or maintain these features, but Cognito's implementation is also better than what we would be justified in building ourselves.
- Amazon Cognito makes user management easy. This reduces the time we have to spend supporting users. Non-technical product managers can even use the AWS Console to manage users without requiring support from developers.
- Amazon Cognito is likely more secure than what would be built in-house; a portion of our attack surface is now managed by Amazon.

- The feature sets for Okta allow for more creative and diverse solutions to existing issues.
- User experience has benefited greatly from the Single Sign On experience.
