I would think for basic level app activity, this would be a great software. For more complex level data, I don't think this platform serves as well as others out there that are available

Power BI is great at dynamically reflecting real time data. It has wonderful views of data and can narrate a story that is powerful and impressive. Decisions can be made on the overall visuals shown. BI can show you where your sales are picking up while showing you areas to focus on. The quality of your BI dashboard tremendously improves with the overall quality of your incoming data. BI has great capability to share results across the organization in a secure and safe way in almost any computer platform. Mobile phones welcome too!

Pros

  • The visuals in the platform are easy to read and understand and make it simple to understand the data you are looking at.
  • I find that the data in App Annie is very reliable in terms of the number of downloads we see on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • It gives me the ability to integrate the data here with other analytics and provide viewers and consumers good solid information on our performance.

  • Microsoft Power BI has beautiful visuals that are made in-house and externally. It really helps you develop a story.
  • Microsoft Power BI also has an easy to setup database model reader and can really help you at ease with development of buttons/controls for the end user.
  • The web portal works well and users have easy access to their sales data.

Cons

  • I do think there are quite a few side bar options when you first login to the software. I'd like to see the features maybe more condensed.
  • For us, it would be super useful to see more zip code or county level data in the software.
  • I would like to see a PDF version offered in the export options. It would make the presentation of the chart data more appealing.

  • I can not think of any. Until now, all works well!

Well the fact that the freemium features are all that I need right now, I will most definitely continue to use it on a daily basis. I might upgrade to the pro version in the future if I need more data than what I am getting now. But for now it works great for what I need.

PBI is very easy to use because of its similarity with power pivot and excel. DAX is the basic foundation language to be mastered to quickly build reports. Custom measures have been introduce to write instant DAX functions (But doesnt work all the time and need a understanding of DAX to debug). Easy to chart multiple charts and also third party charts

Alternatives Considered

We use Google 360 and are able to do a much deeper dive into the activity we see on our apps. I think App Annie is a great starting point product, but for more in depth analytics, something like a Google 360 or Adobe might be better.

Power BI performs quite well in comparison to it's competitor's products. We compared it mainly to GoodData and Tableau. Power BI has a great pricing. It's affordable and efficient with mid-sized datasets. Hence many companies go for it. Competitive products like Tableau are well-suited to handling huge datasets, and also create better dashboards in some instances, but the pricing is not suitable for small scale industry or business. GoodData, on the other hand, is relatively new in the market. It has attractive pricing but will take time to develop the sophisticated functionality provided by Power BI.

Power BI might have better ways to distribute dashboards amongst teams, but I'm not very familiar with them. For the most part, I share Power BI files with coworkers by saving the files on a shared drive which can be cumbersome as often the file size is quite large. There are also concerns about hosting dashboards on the web when they are connected to live data sources.

I have yet to find something that Power BI cannot access for data analysis. As it is a Microsoft product it plays particularly nice with the Office suite as well as Access, but it works just fine with SQL as well. It can be difficult merging data, but so far I've been able to get done what I need to do. It also allows a good deal of calculation and customization.

Return on Investment

  • Since I'm not a purchaser of the product, only a user, I can't really speak to the ROI.
  • I do think it serves a purpose and we are able to get some usable data from it.
  • I think until we add other analytical software, this was a great starting point.

  • It's a good start for setting up customized dashboards.
  • Available for all users based on Office 365 platform we have in place.
  • Doesn't really allow depth of report - specifically customization of visual displays.
