Articulate Storyline

I think Storyline is great for self-reviews. It is fairly easy to set up a "Drag and Drop" slide with a few questions to drag over to the right answer. You can use pictures and graphics to make it more appealing and interactive. It is also very useful for training processes. For example, if you wanted to show someone how to use a specific program, you can use screenshots and screen video captures to help show the process. I think it would be harder to use Storyline for a class lecture or just for videos. For example, if you wanted to record a physical classroom, or record a screen capture in which you are just using screen captures.

Canvas

Canvas is an LMS that is wonderful for schools that want a good online program. Canvas organizes the classroom for the instructor and makes it easy for the student to follow. It provides discussions and assignments that are essential in creating an effective online course with student interaction.

Pros

  • Articulate Storyline is especially adept at providing interactive training modules with the ability to add in various learning paths with animations and button selection. When done correctly it can be highly engaging for the user.
  • It is very easy to add voice over, screen shot, and screen capture video to your modules with the recording software built right into the program. This instantly eliminated our need for external software to fill these roles and was a huge time saver.
  • As we use multiple methods for module delivery, Articulate's publishing options are first rate. You can burn to a CD, publish as a SCORM package for a LMS, publish to a website, or even as a Word doc if you need to pass around just the content for review. This versatility serves all our needs.

Cons

  • Availability for Mac users - I believe this is something they're actively working on, but right now, Articulate is only for Windows.
  • More xAPI features - right now, it is limited in its ability for xAPI unless you do custom coding.

  • Canvas allows instructors and course editors to embed images directly through the WYSIWYG editor, but not students. Students in the course (if they don't know how to embed external images using code) have to attach images, which makes the discussions a little more clunky and less fun (having to open attached files instead of viewing inline).
  • The options for adaptive release and gamification in general, including achievement badges, are much more limited in Canvas than in Blackboard Learn. I would like to see more advanced options in this area in Canvas.

We can easily convert our older content into Storyline 2 courses, which makes updates a breeze. We've been well-pleased with the software, Articulate's dedication to releasing bug fixes and new features, and the fact that it is well-received by our associates and stakeholders.

The other LMS tools have fallen behind. One reason is they are not able to update their systems, features, toolsets in a timely manner. While other LMS providers release bug fixes and new features several times a year, schools struggle to install and implement them in a timely manner. It is not uncommon for a school to take 6 months to a year to fully install and implement new releases on other LMS platforms. With Canvas, those features are released every 3 weeks, and there is nothing for a school to do other than choose to turn them on once released. This has allowed Instructure to innovate faster, and get new features and tools to customers quicker. Other factors include great pricing, customer support, and the innovative way in which LTI is implemented in the tool.

Usability

This is by far the most accessible product for creating eLearning. A new user can become quite competent in using Articulate in a short period of time and become proficient in less than a year. I imagine that becoming an expert may take two years or more of consistent use, but even that is a short period of time.

Having used Blackboard for a year I must say Canvas is MUCH easier for both students and faculty to use. The interface is clean and everything is pretty straight forward.

Articulate depends on both staff and individual users to support their products through their "ELearning Heroes" website. The site provides for a useful means by which customers can rise to the level of expert in solving problems or "Hero". Because requests for help are posted in either a support or user forum, you can expect to get answers quickly to problems. Sometimes the staff may be busy and so answers may take some time.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Implementing Articulate Storyline was a straight-forward and painless as humanly possible. There were no headaches found with other authoring tools not behaving well in existing systems, it really is excellently designed software. Everything was thought out so very well.

Once you purchase and sign the contract there is nothing to install or hardware to buy. You can almost immediately start using it and have courses up and going within weeks. We signed in December and had pilot courses online ready to go for the start of school in January

Alternatives Considered

Captivate - more expensive and the user interface was more complex and difficult to pick up. Also had less functionality.
Mike Smith profile photo
Canvas's ease of use and ease of administration were huge deciding factors in the decision to use Canvas as our preferred LMS. We found that on average Canvas took 1/3 the clicks to accomplish the same tasks as Blackboard, and the structure of data in Canvas is far superior to Sakai.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

  • I used Canvas as a student attending a university so I cannot speak to the overall business objectives. However, as a student wanting to attend a reputable university while working in my career, I saved a lot of money. Instead of moving, I was able to attend the university online with Canvas.
