Articulate Storyline

Articulate Storyline is very well suited for customer service type training or other sort of flashy demonstrations as it offers a lot of human character options and interactivity features. We use Storyline for our more technical training, however we only utilize about 20% of the program's features because the characters or animations are quite out of place in our modules. We need a much more academic look and feel in our material.

Canvas

Canvas is well suited for instruction and non-instruction services because of its ease of use of its platform that can be accessed from any where and because of the LMS's continuous communication with the users. One of the main issues that I felt missing/troubling was that our Canvas LMS could not communicate well with our Banner Student Information System. We were unable to send grades from Canvas to Banner. I know Banner is a Student Information Systemd, not an LMS, but I would hope that more of an effort be taken to help integrate our Banner-or other systems-to fully utilize the forwarding of grades at the end of the semester. This would really help avert human errors in grade postings/submissions.

Pros

  • Articulate Storyline is especially adept at providing interactive training modules with the ability to add in various learning paths with animations and button selection. When done correctly it can be highly engaging for the user.
  • It is very easy to add voice over, screen shot, and screen capture video to your modules with the recording software built right into the program. This instantly eliminated our need for external software to fill these roles and was a huge time saver.
  • As we use multiple methods for module delivery, Articulate's publishing options are first rate. You can burn to a CD, publish as a SCORM package for a LMS, publish to a website, or even as a Word doc if you need to pass around just the content for review. This versatility serves all our needs.

  • Grades are available in real time to the students and can be checked any time, if instructors are current in their grading.
  • Automated grading of quizzes and exams. This saves so much time for instructors like me.
  • Allows students to access course materials and course content 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. If a student misses class, he or she can still keep up by accessing and completing materials in Canvas.
  • We also use the Respondus Lockdown Browser, which allows particular Canvas quizzes & exams to be taken online through a special browser that locks the screen of the computer so other sites, programs, files, etc cannot be accessed during the test. This is a very proactive approach to prevent cheating.

Cons

  • I think they are working hard on this area but there is still some room for improvement in the HTML 5 to ensure it works consistently across multiple browser platforms and mobile devices.
  • Provide more options for the look/feel of the player. Include a built-in option for a "transparent player" instead of having to go in and change the transparency settings to achieve a transparent player effect.
  • The ability to edit graphics (since it is integrated with PowerPoint) from within Storyline itself would be a nice addition.
  • A more robust audio editing tool which allows you to edit (cut/paste, fade in/fade out audio, etc.) in a more intuitive way.

  • Canvas updates fairly frequently. Most of the changes are in fact great improvements. However, some are released that there should have been more input from the community before they were implemented.
  • I would like to see more options in how to edit modules as they appear to the students. More color options instead of everything being black text in Modules for them.
  • More customization options for each univeristy's instance of Canvas.

We can easily convert our older content into Storyline 2 courses, which makes updates a breeze. We've been well-pleased with the software, Articulate's dedication to releasing bug fixes and new features, and the fact that it is well-received by our associates and stakeholders.

Overall the ease of use is one of its endearing qualities. You can open the program, start a new project and get going regardless of your expertise with it. If you have ever created a presentation of any kind you can get going with Storyline on day 1 the first time you open it

Having used Blackboard for a year I must say Canvas is MUCH easier for both students and faculty to use. The interface is clean and everything is pretty straight forward.

The Articulate staff and user community converge into the invaluable resource known as the eLearning Heroes Community. You can go there for anything ranging from tech help, inspiration, and though provoking discussion. They don't just support you using the software, they support you in your career as an Instructional Designer or eLearning Developer, and no one else offers that on the same level as Articulate.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Once you purchase and sign the contract there is nothing to install or hardware to buy. You can almost immediately start using it and have courses up and going within weeks. We signed in December and had pilot courses online ready to go for the start of school in January

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate is a powerful authoring tool that creates great eLearning. I chose Articulate Storyline because it gave me the same great output and was not hard to learn. I don't need a special "language" to use it. At a former company where we used Adobe Captivate, it took me much longer to get things created. I get an interactive course that looks great and meets our objectives that is not so complicated to learn how to create with Storyline.

Honestly, I prefer Blackboard. It's a behemoth and hard to maintain with the number of clicks it takes to set something up or edit. And the voice recording tools are clunky, but it offers more variety in terms of course customization. The flexibility of how you set up the menu bar is something I find useful for students (like I said earlier, the homepage in Canvas has to be really good for students not to feel lost). Canvas looks better than Blackboard and has better video and audio recording tools, but I kind of like Blackboard better.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • It has made working with subject matter experts easier when trying to design impactful learning. They get the basics of what can be done in a short amount of time and have stopped asking for recorded PowerPoint.
  • Due to quick publishing of a course with multiple ways for output, we can get courses into our LMS without hassle.

  • Provides direct support for online and blended courses as measured with KPIs.
  • Provides indirect support for F2F courses.
  • Steady adoption growth. 90% utilization metrics.
