ASP.NET

ASP.NET is one of the main languages that we use across all of our Web Projects. We use Asp.net in may ways in our department. We use [ASP.NET] for developing most of our web projects using [ASP.NET] MVC for most of our custom applications, and we also integrated our project, which develop using [ASP.NET] with numerous systems. What I disliked is the updates on the framework. And the compatibility on different programming tools. Asp.net uses more Web server resources than others and it is expensive for small companies.

It's generally fantastic to work with. Of course, we create custom styles, so if anyone wants to use a component that wasn't styled yet, that requires a one-time effort by someone, but that's a problem on our side. The documentation is generally very self-explanatory and I rarely get calls with questions concerning the (API) documentation of the components. It is well suited in general for larger businesses that wants to quickly write software without having to worry about having to write all the components. For a smaller business, however, or even individual users, it would be quite expensive (however I don't really know the pricing structures so I might be wrong here too!).

Pros

ASP.NET

  • Ease of use with drag and drop functionality; makes the learning curve less steep as new users are already familiar with this paradigm.
  • Powerful .Net Framework libraries
  • Control panel to manage and control the building of web applications
  • Code-behind can be in C# or VB.NET

Cons

ASP.NET

  • Making web forms obsolete was a mistake; instead, creating modern web forms that use the drag and drop UI is something we have come to expect from ASP.NET.
  • It takes a long time for the NET collection to start up when running under IIS for some reason.

  • Sometime it's getting stuck due to my pc memory issues.
  • Installation and uninstallation take a bit longer than excepted.

It takes effort to include a new component library into existing software, especially in our case where we have 5 large applications that are written and maintained by about 100 developers. So changing such a core thing comes with a lot of effort. The other reason we will very likely renew our use of Syncfusion Essential Studio Enterprise Edition is that it works really well and has helped us to speed up the development process.

I don't like javascript that much, personally. Having a backend built on top of javascript in the case of Node.js leaves me lying awake at night. I prefer strongly typed languages and knowing I have the support of Microsoft behind my choice of systems. Node.js when I experimented was awkward to setup and not as intuitive as ASP.NET.

They are basically on par, but the docs and in general, including support, Telerik is a bit superior. I find it to be better in terms of user-friendliness and also better polished UI wise, I mean, overall they just look better and offer somewhat better themes/skins to all the widgets.

Return on Investment

ASP.NET

  • Allows for rapid application development which saves money and time
  • Can get unnecessarily complicated and be difficult to maintain at times, wasting time and money
  • It's free, so there is no cost - though you may need to pay for Visual Studio
