Audacity

Overall Audacity is a great program for audio editing in a wide range of uses. It is quick and easy to start using it for basic tasks but has the functions to do more advanced tasks with a little understanding of the interface. Audacity has many editing options available and a wide range of keyboard and mouse shortcuts so anyone using it professionally would be able to navigate it quickly and efficiently. It is available on the three main computer platforms, Windows, MacOS and Linux, and being open source software it has the source available for those that want to change it and make the product better. Audacity is a small download and small install meaning start up is quick, and running multiple instances is possible and doesn't hog machine resources. The only time I think it may not be suitable is for complete novices that may need a program with less options or features as the amount of options, switches, and sliders in Audacity could be confusing for them.

Final Cut Pro X

Final Cut really is a great software for video editing (hey, The Matrix was made completely on Final Cut!), but for someone who works heavily in Photoshop, After Effects, Audition and Illustrator- it's probably best for you to stick with Premiere. If you are solely looking for a great editing software for your mac that is a step up from iMovie, Final Cut Pro X would be perfect for you.

Pros

Audacity

  • Audacity has a wide variety of controls and capabilities for editing, making it a very robust tool for audio editing.
  • Even though it's a robust tool, it is very easy to use to get many basic things done in audio editing. The learning curve is small.
  • Love that audacity is free! What else could you ask for? There really is no reason not to use it.

Final Cut Pro X

  • Animation of text/ objects - is by far one of the most useful built-in feature of Final Cut Pro X. Usually, Animations are not supported natively by video editing software. However, with Final Cut Pro X, it's different. You can create smooth animations of any text/ object, right from the tool itself with minute details.
  • Magnetic Timeline - is again classic Final Cut Pro X feature. As you know, video creators work with tons of small clips of audio/ video. The magnetic timeline feature helps join together automatically different clips, which removes the requirement of zooming in and finely placing the clip at the correct position. Basically, it does the job for you, automatically and intelligently.
  • Built in preset and templates - are simply more than required for any project. You get huge list of presets like titles and transitions, which can be used out of the box and simply fits perfectly. In case you do not like one, you can choose from a huge list.

Cons

Audacity

  • The user interface theme has only two options, light and dark. It would be better if it was more customizable.
  • Sometimes there is a lag or break when opening the software.
  • There is no option to listen to the audio live with effects while you are recording.

Final Cut Pro X

  • Would be nice to have more built in exporting options for those of use who don't know how to compress videos well.
  • More built in effects would be a plus.
  • I always struggle with adding text but it could just be me.

Final Cut Pro is a great software package for editing, and obviously, good things require training to understand and comprehend what your are editing. I do not give a 10/10 because it would be easier to have a comprehensive manual inside the software, rather that researching or getting yourself trained.

The best support comes from communities and blog posts, but there really is no authoritative answer for anything. You basically have to wing it. However, since there's no financial barrier to entry, everyone is creating their own help documents so you're bound to find a solution.

Most of the support I need, I find online. While Apple has a Q/A section on their site, it's not always beneficial in answering the questions that I have. With that said, they regularly update the software, and when updates lead to crashes, they usually have another update not far behind.

Implementing Final Cut Pro into the organization was a smooth transition from what we didn't had. We felt we went from zero to hero with this software, due to all the great features that we learned. We took some time in training staff on how to use the software but at the end, this was very useful and important.

Alternatives Considered

Audacity

Audacity holds its own against the leading industry competitor software, Audition. For free software, it is incredible the range of options and features that you can find in the paid alternative. Audacity allows us to roll out the software to large teams and get them up to speed in a matter of days, where everyone is on the same page. They can install the software on work and home computers and have access anywhere.

Final Cut Pro X

I find that many users have some iMovie experience when approaching Final Cut Pro X, and thus segue quickly to it. Premiere is also a good product, timeline-based, with a very mature expansion market, possibly with a cluttered interface. DaVinci Resolve is the free product from Blackmagic, but complaints consist of node-based management confusion and costly upgrades outside of the limited free version.

Return on Investment

Audacity

  • I was able to make loops of my music to sell on royalty-free music sites years before I had my Mac Pro.
  • Able to quickly edit music and other audio tracks on a PC without having to purchase a separate program, allowing us to upload more creative videos without having to spend extra money.

Final Cut Pro X

  • We are regularly lauded for our high-quality videos by donors and prospects, which greatly improves our standing in their eyes.
  • Our Final Cut Pro X-created videos have contributed to our receiving large grant awards.
  • Our videos have been shared and promoted by similar organizations, which has improved our standing in our field and adjacent fields.
