Auth0

Auth0 is mainly a solution for authentication and authorization. And it does what it promises in that aspect, but I also find it very helpful when it comes to customer support because I can see a lot of crucial information about user activity. So we have allowed our customer services team members to access auth0 backend log files for troubleshooting user login issues, etc. And the backend administration site is fairly easy to understand. Metadata along with Rules and Hooks allow for flexibility for token generation . Multiple ways to authenticate.

Yubico

I 100% recommend Yubico for organizations that work with secure or confidential information. The use of 2-factor authentication should be a given: it protects information and assets (personal and organizational) and adds an additional layer of security. Yubico's security is demonstrably robust, and it integrates (sometimes with some finagling/legwork) with most 2FA platforms/logins. Additionally, the key itself is either a semipermanent unobtrusive attachment or a small key you can plug into the computer. I highly recommend Yubikeys for both personal and professional use.

Pros

Auth0

  • The Auth0 documentation provides plenty of examples and tutorials for users to get up and running quickly
  • Auth0 is very flexible, it has a lot of pre-build authentication methods but also allows you to customize your method of authentication if you need to build off an internal provider
  • The Auth0 user interface is generally intuitive and it has detailed logs to assist with auditing
  • Auth0 comes at a very competitive price-point if your platform doesn't require a huge number of users (the free tier alone could be sufficient for many)

Yubico

  • Unobtrusive use of USB-C key (semi-permanently in a laptop or computer port).
  • Excellent 2-factor authentication requiring interaction/presence of the physical key.
  • Integrates with platforms/password managers for personal and organizational use.

Cons

Auth0

  • Price point for ALL features can get a bit pricey. But they have a startup plan which helps big time. Developer plans start at $23/mo and do not include all features.
  • Actions, rules, hooks, and email customization are great features, but the UI is a bit tough sometimes, not very responsive to screen size and code editors are cut off in a difficult place to maneuver.

Yubico

  • Setup can be a little confusing for inexperienced users: documentation and step-by-step instructions will help ensure smoothe onboarding.
  • Specific implementations (like for Google) can be tricky. Fortunately, Yubico provides a lot of support / documentation on impelementation.

There isn't a clear method to get a hold of support when trouble arises if you're on their standard plan. You can file a support ticket and they generally are responsive. I've often been able to find similar questions to the questions I've had when it comes to support in their ticket history, however, some have been closed without a satisfactory conclusion for the original poster.

Okta is very similar to Auth0, but we got some references that used Auth0 so we decided for that, most because it was recommended. With Amazon Cognito was the same, there were not experience with any of these before so we went with Auth0 as first experience and stayed with it.

Yubico

I haven't used any other physical security devices previously. YubiKey and other tech giants like Google, Cisco, and RSA all offer some form of physical/hardware-based security, which is implemented at many workplaces. Yubico was selected for its comprehensive documentation, reputation of excellence, and reliability within the security community itself.

Return on Investment

Auth0

  • With Auth0, we saved a lot of time and money implementing identity management that would work across all of our services instead of doing it ourselves.
  • There's no going back from Auth0. We've become really dependent on them.
  • It reduces a lot of burden on our side to be GDPR compliant.

  • Cost for implementation can be a bit high (per-key runs around forty dollars).
  • Keeping information and access secure is priceless and should be a part of any business.
  • Sleek/small/unobtrusive, which makes it stand out among other USB security options.
