Chose Veracode
Have also evaluated services by GitHub and Snyk. I will say that we continue to use Veracode because of its brand recognition and vendor status in the financial services industry. However if my current company was not operating in this industry I would be tempted to use the …
Chose Veracode
Veracode has been longer on the market and has build the good reputation. We appreciate that they constantly improving the quality of their software and adding new features.
Chose Veracode
Earlier in our organisation, Fortify was used (formerly from HP but now owned by Micro Focus). The general consensus was that there was too much noise (false positives), taking a lot of time to find and then fix the real issues.

SonarQube is also used in our organisation but not …
Chose Veracode
Veracode I think stands at the top of the pile when it comes to do static scans of the code base.
Chose Veracode
Snyk has a much better and more intuitive UI, but as far as I know does not provide DAST and SAST like Veracode does. When it comes to SCA, you might be better off going with Snyk.
Chose Veracode
I don't recall the other products we reviewed, but certainly, Veracode had the best reputation for providing product review and customer confidence ratings.

GitHub is well suited for software development, GitHub is particularly well suited for software development projects, where teams need to collaborate on code, track changes, and review code changes. Also for open-source projects, GitHub is an ideal platform for open-source projects, where teams of developers from all over the world can collaborate on code and contribute to projects. For documentation, GitHub provides a platform for creating and sharing documentation, making it an ideal solution for teams that need to create and maintain documentation. On small and medium-sized teams GitHub is well suited as those teams that need to collaborate on software projects and track changes to their code.

Veracode is well suited for development applications that can be made more secure right from the beginning. There is an excellent extension in Visual Studio that scans code from the IDE. However, it is less appropriate or incompatible with scanning SOAP or WSDL APIs. It supports only REST APIs.

Pros
GitHub
  • As a repository it's great. It houses almost all the open-source applications/code that anyone can fork and play with. A huge collection of sample codes available with problem statements across different domains make Github a one-stop location.
  • I use GitHub with Windows and the Git Bash is superb. It [is] a powerful alternative to the Command Prompt and Powershell. Allows me to run shell scripts and UNIX commands inside the terminal [on] a Windows PC.
  • GitHub integration with almost all cloud development/deployment platforms is amazing. Deploying a new application in Azure is really smooth. Just link the GitHub repositories and it's good to go. From automatic build to deployment everything is just amazing.

  • Veracode performs Static Application Security Testing (SAST) very well by finding flaws in the code using entry points so that it tests for everything a user can interact with in the application. This approach is very helpful for avoiding a lot of false positives early on.
  • Veracode performs SCA automatically on every SAST scan, so that we don't have to manually scan the application again for SCA scans.
  • Veracode integrates very well with the ticketing tools, so that it becomes very easy to track every finding and its status within our ticketing tool.

Cons
GitHub
  • When browsing history of a file, GitHub could make it easier to see the file after a particular commit instead of just being able to quickly view the commit. I'd like to be able to see the commit or the file itself in one click.
  • I would like to be able to view commits by user.
  • I would love to be able to traverse code on GitHub (go to definition, etc) - the good news here is that they are working on these features!

  • Scan results stability: from one scan to another, additional flaws appear whereas code did not change.
  • Entry points selection: hard to be sure selection is optimal, should be automatized or hidden.
  • Branches management: we currently use sandboxes to scan different branches of our software. Would be good to have real branches management.

GitHub's ease of use and continued investment into the Developer Experience have made it the de facto tool for our engineers to manage software changes. With new features that continue to come out, we have been able to consolidate several other SaaS solutions and reduce the number of tools required for each engineer to perform their job responsibilities.

At this time, and we just renewed a month ago, I dont see any products out there overall that can offer what Veracode does. Yes, its not cheap by any means, but for the money its the best application security scanning tool out there.

Usability
GitHub
- Easy to use compared to other version control software. UI interface makes it easy to use, as well as protects against making a major mistake by deleting code, etc. - UI looks modern. - Support for multiple platforms, which I assume will only get better with time. - Student benefits are awesome! - The size limitations on their repositories make sense to me. Not too crazy but realistic from a business perspective.

- Almost no setup required and easy to configure - Very easy to use, intuitive UI with integrated analytics and learning portals. - Seamless to review the results, triage them, generate reports. - Security progression of the product/application is tracked via successive scans. - Privileges/Roles nicely fine grained and tightly controlled to let teams "view" only their products.

At this point, it runs well and mostly in a timely fashion. Dynamic scans take days but this may be a config issue still to be resolved.

Support Rating
GitHub
It's a testament to how easy it is to use GitHub and how many others use it that you can pretty much find the answer to any problem you have by searching online. Consequently, I've never needed to use their support. It's an incredibly easy tool to set up initially, so it won't require much onboarding expertise to get started.

Overall, Veracode support is helpful, community support is great, and documentation is available for self-service. Our Customer Success Manager is very helpful and reaches out regularly to see if we need assistance. We have not utilized many of the other resources offered by Veracode, however, in the future we would like to leverage secure coding training for our Development teams.

We use it as a SAS service, so really just getting our teams to mold the use of Veracode into their SDLC has been a process of years in the making. It comes down to what your teams are ready and willing to accept and change. Management is key in getting their groups on board with using it regularly. If it doesnt have management backing, your security teams have little to no influence in getting this process off the ground fully.

GitHub
At the time to evaluation - Bitbucket was very tightly integrated into Atlassian’s suite of tools. For an organization that is starting out and looking to spend limited funds effectively - the cost/benefit of using that suite of tools usually doesn’t make sense. Granted things may have changed since then (its been over 5 years) - but at the time GitHub was effective - and all prospective engineers knew about it and already had accounts. This made it very easy to add to the organization and not lose time in training, etc. Developers seem to really love GitHub above most other tools out there - so that plays into the decision making as well.

Veracode is slower with scan results however the flaws discovered and sites crawled are almost the same. Rapid7 InsightAppSec only does dynamic scans. Veracode did find more links on a site crawl. Rapid7 InsightAppSec has more out of the box reports than Veracode. Both integration to DevOps tools were striaghtforward.

GitHub
  • Github has increased our rate of code development, increasing our publishing rate. This helps bring attention to the research we are doing and ultimately brings in more funding for further research.
  • Because GitHub makes my team more efficient, we are able to put more hours into code development / report writing rather than agonizing over different versions of code created without version control software.
  • We use a paid version of GitHub, because we work through private repositories, but the increase in productivity, efficiency, and research progress is definitely worth the price.
