TIBCO Jaspersoft

Well suited for formatting needs and specific export types.
Great for creating static scheduled reports because they are easily editable by non-developers.
Less suited for non-developer level users if looking for an ad hoc tool as I believe they still need to do more work in making the ease-of-use of their ad hoc tool so that it is more accessible to entry-level users to reporting software.

Overall as an OEM vendor of analytics, I would say it was about average. They did help us get to market sooner than if we developed everything in-house, but I felt the dashboards were pretty ugly and I wouldn't say I was super impressed. I found the Analyzer OLAP tool to be very useful and that part would have been harder to develop in-house, but I would skip the dashboards next time and go straight to developing those in-house, which is what we ended up with in the end

Pros

  • Modern looking reporting - (many other products are still archaic looking in their default selections)
  • Quick time-to-market turn-around from concept to reality when creating a report
  • Listens to customer feedback for future features - this, I believe, has greatly shaped some of the upgrade features we have seen of late that have brought the level of usefulness up for Jaspersoft and ease of use for non-developer users
  • Full customization of reports with scheduling and many different formats available (I mention this because some other products had limited export format options)
Ashley Lee profile photo
  • Being able to use the OLAP Analyzer tool saved our organization a lot of time in not needing to develop an OLAP tool on our own.
  • The ability to customize the tool and integrate all the internationalization we required was pretty straightforward.

Cons

  • Community is quite large but it would be much more helpful if more experts could answer our questions
  • Their API is not that well documented
  • I would prefer some of the Pro features to exist on community edition as well, like for example HTML5 Charts
Andreas Evagorou profile photo
  • Report designer seems to be buggy on Windows 7
  • The interface for the report designer is out dated and difficult to navigate or use.
  • I would like to see a tool tip when hovering over options

JasperReports has a very high value proposition. It is continually being updated with new features and functionality, is very portable, and is well priced for its breadth of offerings

Although the security piece is a major game changer in our shop, Pentaho is a great tool overall. I have known other shops to work out their security issues with Pentaho and do great things so we'll need to get through this growing pain point as well and make Pentaho our positive game changer. I am excited to see the improvements in Pentaho 5 and look forward to evangelizing it's benefits over the more high priced solutions out there

I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

We've never had an outage of the software itself. If it was unavailable, it was due to a network outage, not a problem with Jasper.

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

Support

We have been several times in the need of support from Tibco, mostly to setup and fine tune the production environment, and every time their support was always willing to help. Whenever the issue was complex, and eventually due to customizations done by us at their software, we can anytime reach to our Customer Success Manager, who is available to enter and contribute into our internal discussions with all our teams, so to be involved in our product implementation roadmap, and connecting back to Tibco support team, to provide clarity on our needs and deadlines. The result is our requests get resolved brilliantly.

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

Breadth of Deployment

Typically system analysts, business analysts and departmental managers were our target audience. 10-15 users was the most we could reach before we decided to go with another suite of Products. But who ever used it did appreciate the end to end flow of data that they could see as opposed to the data obfuscation they noticed before.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Crystal Reports, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Business Objects prior to my experience with Jaspersoft. Unlike SSRS, Jaspersoft works easily with multiple database platforms. Crystal Reports is aimed more directly at the end-user, and Business Objects while flexible, is much less developer friendly. Jaspersoft provides cross-platform/database functionality, customizability and the ability to integrate into whatever end-user interface is desired. Additionally, it is much more scalable than the others mentioned. These are some of the reasons we selected Jaspersoft.

It has been too long since we did the research (over three years) before choosing Pentaho so I cannot remember exactly which competing products we looked at. In the end, the problem with all the others was that they were too expensive for our small company. Pentaho was reasonably priced and was exactly what we were looking for.Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, SAS all provide similar, but very expensive products.

Pentaho offers the possibility of sending to XLS, PDF or CSV, once saved on your local computer you can share with anyone. Reports used for PDF must have a special design from the start. Also, a special schedule to send report can be created in the .xaction and is working fine.

Return on Investment

  • Markets have provided numerous examples of where OLAP analysis led to modifications of marketing campaigns that directly affected the bottom line. Just last week, one marketer reported a change that is now expected to yield a $70-80k improvement over the next 12 months. The largest was a reported $400k improvement several years ago.
  • Field managers have reported that they are now more inclined to act on data now that graphical drill-down reports are available.
