Compared to other SQL type databases, Oracle can simply be described as a super-set or an extension of them.
As Oracle has not only the features of SQL but also PL/SQL, it is much more feature rich compared to other databases technologies. However, there is no fair way to compared Oracle against MongoDB as their basic principles are on totally different terms.Any application that needs not only the power of storage but automatic manipulation of data dynamically during runtime is definitely a place where Oracle should be used.

We're still in evaluation but based on cost and affordability vs. performance for our specific needs (running a $500M retail e-commerce shop) Oracle 12c loses. Licensing and support of Enterprise Edition would equate to a significant percentage of our annual revenue and we don't "get" anything more that we really need than competing vendors offer, at a better price point. The advantage Oracle offers is the community and (to a certain extent) its support. However, many of the Oracle user groups are beginning to embrace and include competing RDBMS products in their community, making them more attractive and less risky options for smaller companies.

Even if is quite expensive, Oracle Database 12c is way better than most of its competitors thanks to Oracle experience and skills on database technologies. Oracle Database has always guaranteed the best data recovery and fault management policies, thanks to Oracle's RAC environment. Oracle Database also guarantees reliability, scalability, and inter-connectivity with existing applications (belonging to Oracle suite or not).
For multinational corporations it is really important to have a stable and always accessible environment, since they work at every time zone, as well as a good level of performance in getting answers to queries, and most of Oracle's competitors can't pledge these features, especially open source ones like PostgreSQL.

The third-party solution that we chose (Dotmatics in this case) has developed the chemical cartridge only against Oracle. So there was no need for us to evaluate any other database alternatives.

With Oracle's Database, you're dealing with a faster cloud functionality, more ample community support, and the advantage of stitching a host of other Oracle products to enhance your system. Even though you're tied into the Oracle ecosystem, it is one of the best ones out there in terms of performance, reliability, ease of use, and ease of finding external consultants for functions you're not comfortable with internally.

Oracle Database wins out over MySQL and PostgreSQL in terms of speed and feature set. Oracle supports a larger amount of the ANSI SQL standard and is in most cases noticeably faster in terms of querying.

Oracle Database tends to be a more mature product, with a complete set of SQL syntax, including partitioning, a compiled language (PL/SQL), and fully developed resiliency features, such as Data Guard, RAC, and backups.

Its not a straight forward comparison, but the other major DB platform we use is Actian Matrix. The latter being a columnar non-relational database, it really is a case of comparing apples to oranges - both are fruits but beyond that entirely different. Or in this case, both are 'databases' but aside from a share common SQL structure, they are quite different. Oracle is great at indexing and dealing with relatively small amounts of data. Actian Matrix is fantastic for data mining and massive amounts of data. Different tools for different jobs.

  • SQL Server
Oracle has more flexibility than SQL Server in terms of data migration and data security. Oracle (for me) is also easier to use in terms of ad hoc table creation and views. With SQL Server the amount of restriction in place make it hard for me to do the kind of data migration and table creation I need to get my job done efficiently.

Oracle Database really outshines other database products with its improved performance, powerful module features, and its flexibility. While not perfect, it offers a very good set of SQL tools to setup specialized databases with robust features not found elsewhere. The product is expensive and can be expensive to implement. On the other hand, it offers a long term solution for database needs down the line. An organization may find it hard to "outgrow" Oracle Database if they afford its costs.

Well, Oracle is a solid database and as I mentioned, is for the first quartile of project complexity. The other solutions mentioned databases have more specific goals and respond to reduced complexity. For example MySQL or PostgreSQL are widely used for startups. On the other hand, if you were in my experience to propose a rival to Oracle, SQL Server this would be. Although Oracle Database is preferable in any environment that requires maximum performance, SQL Server could be chosen according to the customer's policies or compatibility with programming tools.

While there are several very good relational databases, some are offered by companies where the database is not the key focus. Even though Oracle's software portfolio has expanded greatly over the years, they remain keenly focused on database technology.

The database selection was not my decision, but i think that under heavy load, Oracle outperforms these alternatives when you put only performance on the table. When a cost-effectiveness analysis is done, depending of your level of demand, some of these competidors can have space into your solution, but you can need to use architectures like server clustering para support the demand

Most of our mission-critical applications run on Oracle. The decision to buy Oracle database was reinforced by the decision to implement eBusiness Suite. However, when we were in the comparison between EBS and SAP, we were already thinking about the Oracle database whoever was the winner.

If you are not working on ad-hoc queries or you already know the queries in advance and the database size is less than 600 TB it is advisable to go for Oracle. But if you have requirements which will have a significantly larger database then one should go with Hadoop or Teradata Database. With Teradata Database, the tools used are not robust and user-friendly as compared to Oracle.

Microsoft SQL, Mysql and a few other products. We opted to go with a DB instead a tool specifically developed for us after wasting time and money. We started with a software company to develop a proprietary tool that took us more than 6 months only for the design and after it was completed never delivered what we needed.

Coming from a MSSQL server background to an Oracle shop, there is much to be said about the differences between the databases. While MS SQL Server is a robust database, the features are somewhat inferior to Oracle. One is that Oracle can be run on other OS platforms, particularly Linux, which makes it much less CPU intensive. Oracle has better scalability, much better backup and recovery tools, can be monitored much easier with the use of 12c Cloud Control, as well as can be administered from cloud control. While I do like working with SQL Server, I prefer 12c since I am able to work with it across multiple platforms, and administer it easier in any way I choose. While with SQL Server, you are limited to how it is administered, particularly only with SSMS (Although I think there's a plugin for TOAD that is an option, I can't speak on the performance of using TOAD for MS SQL Server).

Teradata being the biggest competitor is by far the fastest DBMS in my experience, along with speed Teradata also offers a better price for their enterprise grade solutions. A company looking at oracle should also consider scaling and maybe decide to invest on big data technologies.

I am most familiar with MySQL products having learned this at university and utilizing it for my own research. I utilized this for machine intelligence applications (automated essay scoring and other psychometric work)...and for the volume of data I was collecting and using, the free software was more than enough. HOWEVER, in today's world, it wouldn't have stood up to HIPPA compliance with row and column level security to ensure anonymity between users! Or maybe it would, it's been a few years! To me, it comes down to price, complexity, and the amount of data. For my enterprise work, Oracle 12c is necessary.
