Power PDF Advanced

Overall Satisfaction with Kofax Power PDF (formerly Nuance)

It was recommended to me by my IT department several years ago as a PDF editor with the required functionality and much cheaper than Adobe. I recently updated my laptop and took the opportunity to upgrade to Kofax Power PDF Advanced. The interface has not changed radically but are a step forward in functionality. I continue to find it enormously helpful in processing PDF documents in ways that I can't do with other applications. It is my default app for pdf documents and well worth the price.
  • Extracting parts of pdf documents to produce new documents.
  • Compiling a new single pdf from separate documents.
  • Conversion of a pdf document (even scanned) to a MS Office file.
  • The ability to edit pdf documents and flatten the document afterwards.
  • Access to draw tools could be improved.
  • In document assembly view, I'd like to be able to drag & drop pages in order to re-order a document.
  • In extracting bits out of separate documents to create a new document, I'd like to be able to do several extracts from different documents and keep adding them to the same file. This would avoid the need to do several extractions then a compilation.
  • Time saving is the biggest thing, I work in a consultancy and time is money.
  • The alternative offered to me was Adobe, so there was a cost saving in this sense.
  • Presentation capability, Power PDF gives me better capability to control the quality of PDF documents and also to extract information I need for reports, presentations etc.
It is a fairly standard user interface and once you know your way around, relatively easy to use. Comparable with something like MS Word in terms of use. I think the use of text mark-up is sometimes a difficulty as it seems to not always do what I want it to do. This may be just that I don't use it often and forget certain things.
This is installed by default by our IT, but that lack of any ability to modify or convert means it does not meet my requirements. I also find the management of Digital Signatures very confusing, changing the way signatures are presented is very cumbersome. Additionally the help available to explain how you manage these is poor to say the least.
When I came to upgrade my laptop, customer technical support was prompt and very helpful in offering me options for moving Power PDF to my new machine. Also, I was communicating (by email) with a real person (or an AI that passed the Turing test by miles), which made the whole experience much better. The solution they suggested worked well.

Conversion of PDF documents to Microsoft documents is one of the key features, including the use of OCR for scanned documents. Annotating PDF documents is also something I use often as is restructuring PDF documents, for example, if we are providing a report to a client and we have a pdf document that needs to be included, it is very easy to stitch this in once the report has been converted to a pdf.
Kofax Power PDF is better suited to someone who wants to do more complex editing and extraction/conversion of pdf documents. The cost is not high compared to the equivalent Adobe product but gives much of the required functionality. If someone was thinking of getting Adobe, I'd recommend they look at Power PDF first. Equally, if they are struggling to get the required functionality from the 'free' PDF editors, then again I'd suggest Power PDF.
