Proofpoint Email Protection is used enterprise-wide at our organization as our email filtering and security solution. Our instance resides in the cloud and serves as the first mail hop within our receiving email domains. Along with other Proofpoint products, it helps protect against phishing, malware, impostor and fraud emails, spoofed messages, and others.

Pros

Spoof/impostor detection.
Spam detection.
Bulk mail detection.

Cons

Their policy route administration is clunky.
Filtering rule administration is time-consuming when reordering rules.

Return on Investment

It's a pricey product so our budget takes a hit, but you get what you pay for.

I have not directly evaluated Proofpoint against any other products.

Likelihood to Recommend

Proofpoint Email Protection best serves as an all-in-one solution for mail filtering and security between your mail servers and the internet. Proofpoint can be used both with on-prem email hosting or cloud-based email hosting. Proofpoint itself can be hosted on-prem or in the cloud. I'm failing to think of a reasonable situation where Proofpoint could not or should not be used for the average enterprise.
