Key to knowing true DB performance
Score 8 out of 10
Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
It is used in IT to monitor database performance and to assist with troubleshooting when there are performance issues with key applications. It is primarily used by our Database Administrators and has assisted in maintaining key performance metrics. It has allowed us to be proactive in our approach to performance monitoring and being able to resolve problems before they affect users.
- Reduction in troubleshooting time.
- Historical performance assists with sizing decisions.
In troubleshooting a key application, it was able to highlight a query that had a heavy impact and cost on the performance that significantly affected users' ability to utilize the application. It allowed us to rebuild the query and schedule it for a different time where it was less impactful on user performance. This resulted in significant improvement in user surveys regarding performance.
Yes, the tool provided significant detail in highlighting the performance-related metrics for each query and provided insight on areas to focus on to fine-tune the queries. We have been able to use this tool for a wide-ranging number of queries which has improved overall system performance and user satisfaction.
- SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor
The suite of Solarwinds applications work well together and having a streamlined interface has been useful for our team in terms of intuitiveness and learning curve. Similarly, the Database Performance Analyzer is a natural tool to partner with our existing Application Monitoring module as it creates a big picture view of our overall Application performance.
The integration of the two platforms allows for a more holistic view of system performance, application dependencies and correlation of impact on queries or processes which might be impacting server performance such as processor or memory. From an integration perspective, the ability to call one application from the other makes it a more seamless user experience.
We were a long-time user of Database Analyzer even before it was acquired by SolarWinds. We did look at other applications in the past. As it has been a long period, its not beneficial to mention here. We have seen some other options like from Microsoft and Oracle which are limited.
Recommended overall for database operations and management. The tool is key and has played a good role in providing key information for troubleshooting. It can, at times, present information in a way that can be confusing. But, the application is also very useful for maintaining application-specific metrics that can be used in SLAs and performance metrics.
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer Support
The few times I have had to use support, they were knowledgeable and able to get my issues resolved. I have logged both technical and process oriented questions, and in both instances, they were able to get them resolved in a timely manner and did not require a lot of back and forth to determine the root cause.
Direct access to most experience support engineers - This reduces the time spend trying to get a level 1 responder to understand the issue and it leads to a much faster response and resolution time. Also the engineers are very knowledgeable and are able to provide immediate guidance in getting my incidents dealt with. All techical support should be like this where you get to speak to a experience product engineer.
It gives you a good snapshot on how your system is performing and if they are any underlying issues that should be resolved before they lead to a more serious problem. It also helps my technical team as they dont have to try to carry out the assessment on their own.
We had an issue where for one of our DBs, due to its complexity and business criticality, we were unable to get sufficient performance information on our own, so we had to log a case, and the rep was able to guide us on how to get past the issue we were experienceing and then subsequently garner an improved monitoring experience for a critical DB.
It significantly reduced the load on our team to have to carry out the upgrade and determine an appropriate plan and if anything would be broken. It really helps in just being able to work a suitable engineer who can lead the process and allow us to upgrade a critical tool without worrying about breaking it or having to spend to much time of developing a plan.
