Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery

Unitrends is being used as the sole backup solution for our servers supporting all departments. It integrates with our virtual environment nicely for both backup and recovery processes. The ability to create image backups of physical machines that can be redeployed in a virtual environment for a recovery situation is very helpful and reassuring.
  • Image backups of physical servers are great. This allows a server to be quickly spun up in a virtual environment is the physical server has an issue.
  • Unitrends allows copy jobs to be sent to a physical NAS or their cloud environment.
  • The daily report is easy to read. It is nice to see a combined report of what jobs were successful and which ones failed over night.
  • The file-level recovery process is quick and easy.
  • The error codes are very generic. It can be frustrating trying to figure out exactly why something failed.
  • It seems like jobs get stuck or deleted in the queue too often. This presents a challenge when we have limited bandwidth and need to rerun backups during business hours.
  • The auto-cleanup feature for old copy jobs does not work when you are copying to a local repository, even though I have been told it should. You have to manually remove each copy job individually with three clicks each to delete old copies from the backup catalog.
  • Trying to tweak the journal size and get backups working on big Linux servers is a challenge, particularly for small organizations without a Linux command line expert.
  • The interface of the Unitrends agent feels very outdated and seems to "break" often. It is also difficult to find settings you want.
  • There were some ports in use that were not on the ports list provided by Unitrends support. I had to wait for support to contact the right group internally to tell me what some were used for.
  • Unitrends requires a lot of time babysitting to make sure backups are being completed correctly.
  • If there are any ambiguous errors, I seem to spend a lot of time researching their knowledgebase to find a solution, or ultimately call support only to get told there is something wrong on the machine that is being backed up.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam just seems like a modern backup and recovery solution as compared to Unitrends. There is very little babysitting involved, and it seems to process backups much quicker. (Some of this may be due to sunning Veeam on a scalable virtual server as opposed to a physical appliance.) I also like how if there is a problem with a backup, the errors are more descriptive. Veeam also has a better knowledgebase.
As a backup solution in general, Unitrends just seems to miss the mark. Coming from using another backup solution, Unitrends seemed like a step backwards and more cheap in my mind. If a college asked me for advice on a backup solution, I would recommend evaluating other products. I myself will be making the switch to another solution soon.
