Overall Satisfaction with Varicent

We use it for executive and wholesale business compensation, which is largely discretionary compensation. It does not have any sales component, which makes us an "odd duck" amongst other Varicent customers. Also, because of the visibility of the application, we have a lot more requirements for usability and real-time calculations.

  • Easy to configure any plan.
  • Online performance.
  • Real-time calculations where user enters and system calculates.
  • Real-time workflow, i.e., manager releases statement, employee can see statement right away and not the next day only.
  • Less expensive to maintain because using table-driven parameters for calculations.
  • More transparency for employee statements.
  • Operational efficiency with ability to upload data to tables manually.
Any calculations can be implemented as there are hardly any limitations on complexity. However, online real-time usability is lacking - a simple user enters, and the system calculates work in a way that it is in the browser and hence still needs overnight to be properly reflected in the batch calculations and backend tables.
Implementation consultants worked diligently to allow us to deploy on time, and product enhancements were completed exceptionally fast to meet our deadlines as well. The entire Varicent team rallied to make our implementation a success. Defects were being fixed 24/7 using offshore teams. Even during implementation steps, defects were fixed on the fly.
We have about 50 compensation plans, and it takes a long time to implement each. So scale is impossible unless we can move faster with implementation, or it will take us 20 years. Online and offline performance is not likely to allow us to scale to the 100K users.

I would recommend it to those who use it for sales compensation and performance management where the product is constantly developing. Being an "odd duck" by implementing broad compensation, we are not on the strategic roadmap with the features we need.
