Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for AWS

While working at VMware, I was part of the Cloud business office. All the BUs which used to host their production environment on the AWS cloud will use Veeam Backup for AWS to take regular backups of their to compute workloads (EC2, containers, S3, etc.). Although AWS launched its own Backup service, the Veeam solution expanded well across all the solutions and provide a consistent and fully-automated management experience. Having a prior experience in Veeam solution for taking backup of vSphere VMware infrastructure also helped us.
  • Fully automated solution and notification system.
  • Developer friendly and provide a single pane of glass to manage backup for all AWS services
  • Block and File level backup and recovery
  • Latency was an issue sometimes and after backing up data for 95%, the backup will fail and we will have to re-run
  • UX is great but we would like to have more CLI usage and automation baked into the solution. Especially now when GitOps (IaC) is getting traction.
  • Pricing wise the Veeam solution was difficult for native business to adopt.
  • Our RPO/RTO numbers drastically improved
  • We get 99% + uptime and get individual file-level restores - both incremental and differential
  • Speeds up operations and backup management challenges
Veeam has perfect native integration with AWS and automation capabilities much better than others. Veritas was a great choice but Veeam's integration we felt was better.

Yes

Veeam provides you the option to do file-level backup and lets you do individual file restores. That's great but it essentially spins up worker instances to take backups and that could be a management challenge and increased cost.

Using Veeam Backup for AWS

Veeam has perfect native integration with AWS and automation capabilities much better than others. Veritas was a great choice but Veeam's integration we felt was better.
