Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

We are using Veeam O365 Backup to create an on-premise copy of all our O365 data. Given certain situations where we needed to recover long-deleted or misplaced emails and files, we decided to implement Veeam's O365 backup to deal with those issues. We are running an entire organization backup every hour for every user that includes their Exchange Online data, SharePoint, and OneDrive data are all backed up to a RAID drive for redundancy. We are able to browse and restore any of the backup points when needed to pull an email or file if a user deletes it. It also gives us peace of mind in case of a cybersecurity issue where a rouge program deletes or encrypts all a user's files or emails.
  • Great UI and easy to pick up and configure.
  • Backups are seamless and effective.
  • Detailed backup reporting is missing - Only success, error, and failure.
  • Requires Windows to run, no Linux/WebUI support.
  • Free tier makes TCO very low.
  • Allows recovering of business sensitive data if lost.
We had a few instances where critical emails were lost due to being accidentally deleted, marked as junk, or otherwise. Some files also had been deleted and were not recoverable, especially as versions became overwritten. Veeam provided a free tier which was valuable in helping us test the features and robustness of the overall solution.
The set-up was a little bit tricky at first, having to deal with granular Office 365 permissions. However, once you get over the hurdle of dealing with Azure Active Directory and PowerShell permissions, the actual setup of the application was rather quick. Input a few passwords and you're off. There are few configuration settings ultimately for the backup itself though, as you can only pick certain "objects" to include or exclude. You don't get fine granular detail over retention policies, just blanket retention for the whole organization.
We had a few emails that were deleted accidentally [one was marked as junk when it was actually important and auto-emptied]. With Veeam's O365 Backup, we could go backward in time on an hourly basis around when the email first came in, extract that, and place it back into the user's inbox in just a few minutes of pulling up the console.
In most situations, we typically just restore the file to its original location, since that is where the user knows the file once was. It makes everything easier that way. However, if another user needed a file after de-provisioning a user, we had to send them the file over email, which was much more convenient than downloading it into the console, moving it from there, then emailing it from my personal computer.
My favorite feature would be the ease of use and the "set and forget" nature of the backups. The backup software is unobtrusive once running, staying as a background service in windows without a frontend at all. To use it, you would just log in via the included console and it shows the status. The ability to walk back in time almost indefinitely is also a great help when you have only a very rough idea of when the missing data still existed.
Veeam provides a "best-effort" support response for the free tier which we are currently on. Their support is fairly decent and was able to help get us set up pretty quickly. I do not have experience with their SLA'ed support though, so I can't speak to that.

It's highly recommendable to any organization with a primarily Office 365 data presence. While Microsoft is in charge of providing a highly available service, they aren't in charge of keeping your data secure. It is free for organizations with under 10 users to backup and up to 1TB of Sharepoint data, so it's more than sufficient for small businesses.
