Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365
We use Veeam Backup for Office 365 to backup Exchange online mailboxes, everyone's OneDrive, Teams groups, and Sharepoint online. In order to make our move to Office 365, we needed to be able to control and protect our data. It also gives us easier access to restoring files and mailboxes without having to involve Microsoft.
Pros
- Easy to setup and use.
- It mounts the backup fast and gives you an easy to use UI for restoring files and/or folders.
- Backups all the services that we use in Office 365.
- No outages so far.
Cons
- Instead of "Backup everything" I would like the ability to "Backup everything Teams," "Backup everything Exchange," etc. Since we aren't backing up all user accounts I have to manually add new Teams to a second job.
- When buying more licenses you have to merge the license files together in the portal; this could be done better.
- Reports could be more detailed when something goes wrong.
- It has given us a lot more flexibility since it allowed us to move more data to Azure cloud.
- Does what it should, easy to setup and no maintenance apart from updates.
We were already using Exchange online and saw a small need of being able to restore mailboxes easily. We also saw many advantages with moving more data to the cloud with Teams, Sharepoint Online and OneDrive. But in order to keep our data safe and available, we needed to be able to keep a local copy of it. Since I had previous experience with Veeam Backup and Replication, it looked like an obvious choice.
So far we've had to restore from OneDrive, Mailboxes and Sharepoint Online. Teams have been tested but have not been needed so far. There have been no issues so far, and since it's so easy, even first-line support does this without hesitation. The uses cases have been mostly accidental deleting of files or Sharepoint pages.
We have not had the need to use all the restore options but we could see a use case for them all and it's great that they are available for us when we need them. The one we use the most is restore to the original location and being able to restore to a different folder on the same location.
Being able to share repositories and split between different repositories are of great use. Since it only takes incremental changes we can keep backup data for longer without using up all our storage. If we want to grow even beyond our own storage capacity we could stick it in an AWS bucket or Azure blob.
Considered AvePoint and some other solution. But never got to the test phase. Since I was already familiar with Veeam Backup and Replication we tried this one out and it was just as expected so the choice was easy. It was also harder to compare the other products from lesser known companies.
