Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform Foundation

It is our main backup and recovery system. We backup 17+ VMWare servers in whole every day and they are stored on local disk, copied to a 16-tape autoloading tape system, and then copied to a hosted off-site internet storage vendor. All of it done automatically with minor interaction needed unless there is an issue.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • License portability as your environment needs change
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Accessing data for data mining or re-use of backup copies via API
  • File level restores from VMWare image
  • Automated backup across multiple locations and media
  • Reporting of completed backups and notification of failures
  • Upgrades across new versions could be smoother. Upgrades between different server hardware made easier and not require hours of copying old backups would be even better.
  • More information on all the options in the program readily available as you are trying to set up the system without having to do an internet search to find the best choice or syntax
  • I would really like their online repository setup to be a lot more user friendly.

We have 16 of 24 servers currently being protected by Veeam. Those other 8 are temporary testing servers or non-essential servers that do not require backup. And we increased our server numbers since our initial install due to a new clustered server environment that allowed us the drive space to consolidate 99% of our servers into one environment for management and backup.
  • Overall, positive. We have only had to use the recovery once, but it was one of those times that it was worth every penny to have it be successful.
  • This is difficult to answer for a backup system, because you never want to have a reason to use it, so that cost is best spent by never having to actually use the software for its intended purpose.
  • After all that, we're pleased with the cost of the product being commensurate with it's ability and performance.
Before, we were using a manual single-tape drive as the only backup media with another product that was designed as an agent-based backup on each server. Very legacy. Once we switched to Veeam, we have made huge strides to put as many backup jobs for as many of our servers as possible. It has managed them all from day one with no problems and enabled us to be relatively hands-off in our backup process where we were having several physical tasks daily to complete.
Being able to quickly and simply move our backups to offsite cloud storage has been a huge relief and put our organization into line with the standard 3-2-1 backup paradigm. Eventually, we may advance into cloud-based workloads. When we get to that point, it's good to know the same system we use now can back those systems up at the same time.
We don't really have a need for this ability, so we've never implemented it.
For its few faults, Veeam has been a solid system that works incredibly well in our environment. I have seen very few others that can produce better results without requiring multiple replication servers or cloud hosting costs. I have yet to find another system that better suits our system and our data in the same price range.
