Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Vertex for our tax calculation of sales and use tax.

Pros and Cons

Transaction test works good for deciding the tax rate/taxability of product/service.

There is a delay with customer service. Usually takes a few days to get a response. Would be better to have a quicker turnaround time.

Return on Investment

The taxability matrix allows us to select the appropriate tax driver to commodity code. This is great to have so we have a visual on what tax driver is appropriate for our company.

Vertex Tax Accuracy

Being a retail store, we have many transactions every day. Vertex is able to handle the tax calculations for every transaction correctly and efficiently.

Scalability

We've been consistently adding 8-10 stores every year. Adding a new location is very simple and allows us to focus on other things.

Usability

Vertex isn't very user friendly. They do offer a lot of training and online courses which are great but its best to learn it by doing it.

Alternatives Considered

Avalara

I find Avalara to be more user friendly but not as robust as Vertex.

Vertex is great if you spend the time to be properly trained on how everything works. I feel that Vertex isn't the most user friendly but once you get the hang of it, it runs smoothly.
