It is suited well for ad-hoc and scheduled application vulnerability scans. You must review the results to manually filter out false-positives. You must always keep in mind that this is only a vulnerability scan. It can only find a certain class of vulnerabilities, and it can only do that so well. You should definitely not rely on this tool alone for identifying problems. That being said, I have used it along with every other major commercial vulnerability scanner and find it to the best overall ROI compared to more expensive commercial scanners that don't necessarily give you a better user experience or better vulnerability results. I rarely need support from the vendor, but when I do, they have been responsive and able to solve the issue quickly.

Recorded Future

Recorded Future is mainly beneficial to the SOC. As part of the Monitoring team, Recorded Future makes the investigation of the alarms a lot easier for me. It can show the reputation of the IP/domain or even hashes which helps me redirect my focus to potentially malicious network activities.

Pros

Acunetix by Invicti

  • Fast.
  • Easy-to-use.
  • Great customer support.
  • Reporting features.
  • Supports importing state files from other popular application testing tools.
  • Has other features built-in beyond just scanning for vulnerabilities.

Recorded Future

  • Everything they find is also available in their own cache. So for example if a pastebin expired, you can still view it later on.
  • The risk score of vulnerabilities shows actual malicious activity. Image the CVS-Score is medium, but there is a lot of exploit chatter, you want to prioritize fixing this vulnerability.
  • Their watchlists are easy to set up and offer monitoring your tech-stack, peers, persons of special interest, etc.

Cons

Acunetix by Invicti

  • Does not support multiple endpoints well (e.g. apps and services that do not reside at the same URL).
  • Has authentication problems with modern enterprise apps which involve a lot of redirects to unrelated endpoints, federated IDs, SSO, etc. This is related to the first point.
  • The vulnerability detection capability is not as robust as Burp Suite Pro + extensions, Metasploit + auxiliary modules, Nmap + scripts, etc.

  • For the Browser extension, since the main purpose is to present information with regards to the IP, I think it's best to give us an idea of where the IP originated/some additional information about the organization it belongs to.

I've had an issue with their browser-plugin which didn't want to authenticate correctly. RF's support could arrange for a session with me and identify and solve the issue. I was very pleased how serious they took my problems and also how knowledgeable they are.
If I have more general questions they quickly reply and most likely also have a solution at hand.

Alternatives Considered

Every year, we re-evaluate the tools we are using and licensing. We balance the ever-changing vendor licensing-models, costs, tool features/usability, etc. For the last few years, this has been the best overall commercial tool for our specific use case. However, this is only one of many tools that we use and need.

Recorded Future

To be honest I use Recorded Future together with VirusTotal to fully understand the possible threats on our network. However, Recorded Future has a better threat intelligence feed that I prefer to use as a reference in finalizing my investigations

Return on Investment

Acunetix by Invicti

  • Saved money compared to other commercial scanners, especially over the long run.
  • Scan speed seems to be pretty good compared to some of the bulkier commercial products out there. However, that largely has to do with proper configuration.
  • A downside is that is requires a bit of extra work just to get it set up to scan APIs, web services, etc.

Recorded Future

  • We've been able to identify leaked credentials and close those accounts off.
  • We've also been able to identify malware being distributed or spam being sent out by customers using our infrastructure. Again we could shut off those accounts.
  • Their domain-monitoring allows us to identify typo-squats and issue domain-takedowns for those (or at least add them to our monitoring / detection)
