Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate can open up the door to eLearning, but it is not quite as intuitive as I would have liked to see. There is a lot of support for Adobe Captivate, but it must be constantly sought out on specific topics. The integration of Adobe Stock and Assets gives Captivate a strong push.

It is very well suited as a web based LMS. They have excellent customer service and support. Ask about the reporting features - these are challenging in many LMS applications. The training they provided for administrators is also very good. Overall a great company, and they are constantly working to improve the product

Pros

  • The ability to create demos, software simulations, and practice exercises quickly and easily using the built-in recording features is a huge plus.
  • Captivate allows you to implement rapid prototyping for your customers and then use the prototype to create your course. Customer's love being able to "see" the possibilities instead of trying to visualize it based on a storyboard or design document.
  • It's a flexible tool. It's easy to reorganize your content, control objects, and the ability to create smart shapes and use them as an interactive object/button is a huge time saver.

  • Course compliance for health care providers. GreenLight provides a very user friendly, effective interface and tracking system for courses that are either mandatory for company compliance or licensure.
  • Tracking sign ups for in-class training. GreenLight provides an excellent format for users to sign up for in session trainings. A sign-in sheet can be printed, the course can be limited to certain user groups, assessments can be done to track attendance and courses can be entered after the fact.
  • Course building structure. GreenLight provides a very robust environment to create and customize courses however you'd like.

Cons

  • Additional image editing options within Captivate would be nice.
  • While the addition of State Views in Cp9 are a welcome change, I would prefer to add the views if I want to utilize them instead of having them automatically attached to objects. This would avoid the added step of deleting the states when you don't want to use them.

  • The UI is a little out of date and not as user-friendly or intuitive as could be desired.
  • The uploading of documents and document management could use some work. Changing versions of documentation can be time-consuming.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Our training director has determined that the customer service and ease of use is too difficult. She intends to check into other LMS systems and end our contract with Silkroad.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

The questions regarding how to implement in the system are answered quickly and efficiently. If there is an issue with the technical side or integrations it takes forever to get results and after much escalating.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Lectora and Storyline. All of these authoring tools have their pros and cons. Lectora: great for adding custom UI to a course, or branching. Can be complicated to learn though. Storyline: probably the easiest tool of the three to use. Can be limited. Captivate: excellent at screen recording and grabbing screenshots and making simulations/demos. Difficult to do a custom UI

The system went down/offline for 5 or 6 days in January. This is the month we have 3400 employees taking annual required training. It had several glitches afterwards that took months to correct.

Return on Investment

  • It has enabled us to tailor our courses to the authoring tool that our client wants to use.
  • It lets us work with more clients.
  • It gives us more options in terms of authoring.

  • We have been able to provide solid metrics on what certifications are current and have frequently won bids against that competency.
