Adobe Captivate

If you need a full-featured screen recording application to create robust, interactive training, then I don't think there's a better product out there than Captivate. However, if you just need to create a non-interactive demo, then Captivate may be overkill and there are less expensive and easier to use products out there for that, even within Adobe's own product line. (For example, if you buy Adobe Presenter, it comes with Adobe Presenter Video Express, which is great for creating quick-and-dirty screen capture demos.)If you're only interested in creating non-systems e-learning (like product or compliance e-learning), then I think there are products out there that are better suited to that (unless you're already a Captivate expert), such as Lectora and Storyline.

It is very well suited as a web based LMS. They have excellent customer service and support. Ask about the reporting features - these are challenging in many LMS applications. The training they provided for administrators is also very good. Overall a great company, and they are constantly working to improve the product

Pros

Adobe Captivate

  • The ability to create demos, software simulations, and practice exercises quickly and easily using the built-in recording features is a huge plus.
  • Captivate allows you to implement rapid prototyping for your customers and then use the prototype to create your course. Customer's love being able to "see" the possibilities instead of trying to visualize it based on a storyboard or design document.
  • It's a flexible tool. It's easy to reorganize your content, control objects, and the ability to create smart shapes and use them as an interactive object/button is a huge time saver.

  • GreenLight is very good at keeping track of employee requirements through the use of qualifications. It is the backbone of how courses, classes, requirements and activities are assigned and monitored.
  • The content objects (development) portion of GreenLight is robust. It allows you to mix various content objects from different sources. For instance if you import a SCORM ecourse, an AICC ecourse and want to add an HTML page as an introduction, the software will allow you to combine all seamlessly into one course. In addition, the navigation and sequencing tools offer considerable functionality.
  • The reporting feature of this software is very good (but not best of class). The number of standard reports is fairly extensive and cover most needs. Having the ability to output files for further analysis and manipulation in Excel takes care of a number of areas where the standard reports fall short.

Cons

Adobe Captivate

  • Additional image editing options within Captivate would be nice.
  • While the addition of State Views in Cp9 are a welcome change, I would prefer to add the views if I want to utilize them instead of having them automatically attached to objects. This would avoid the added step of deleting the states when you don't want to use them.

  • Initially when we went with GreenLight, I created a list of things I did not like about the software. I recently reviewed the list and only one or two of the more minor issues remain. There have been a number of improvements made to the software over the past 5 years as they continue to make improvements.
  • The notification portion of the software is one of the weaker areas. There are numerous triggers, however, there isn't enough flexibility in the system to allow for broad customization. The notification triggers generally affect everything that meets the criteria and the only way to make an exception is to turn off notifications for that instance. It would be nice to have the ability to create customized messages for individual elements of a qualification.
  • There hasn't been a way, until recently, to have one qualification contain both certification and recertification requirements. If an employee comes into the company and certifies as a driver we would like that employee to have a different path to recertify the next year. There is a way to do this now but it's not elegant.
  • The course catalog in the employee portal is lacking. Instead of a list you must begin typing the title. If you don't know how to search for things you may not find it especially if you don't know what it's called or exactly what you are looking to find.
  • A few years ago the supervisor/manager functions were moved to the student portal. This was a good thing because managers no longer had to log into a separate admin portal. The downside was that the manager's view is not intuitive and therefore needs some maturity in design to make it more user friendly.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate

I prefer Articulate 360 over Adobe Captivate. While Captivate does have more features overall, Articulate 360 is much easier to navigate and nice, clean courses can be created in a fraction of the time.

SilkRoad Learning

SilkRoad Learning is much easier to customize and roll out globally. The Skillsoft product was expensive, cumbersome, and required a large ramp up time. When working with clients on Skillsoft, too much had to be predetermined, the languages were not fully developed and learners had to pay each time they accessed a module and get reimbursement from the company - it was not effective.

The system went down/offline for 5 or 6 days in January. This is the month we have 3400 employees taking annual required training. It had several glitches afterwards that took months to correct.
