Alfresco ECM

It is enterprise content management with following capabilities:
-Document Management: You can manage millions of document easily and it provide wide rage of meta data framework.
-Web Content Management: It is like SVN model. Sand Box concept is very popular. It provides a very good WEB SCRIPT feature which makes easy integration with other applications.
-Record Management: It provides US government style record management out of box which is very useful for government type of client.
-Alfresco Share: It provides dashlets, pages and a small web application implementation feature that makes it easy to create sites for small/large domain clients.

Seismic

Seismic is well suited for organizing large amounts of marketing materials and allowing for quick discovery, access, and customization of those materials. Seismic is less appropriate for use cases that are a little "outside the box". It handles what it was created to do very well. Where we have run into issues is when we are trying to do something that the Seismic platform was not really created to do.

Pros

  • The organizations demand a hybrid approach, running the same software applications on-premise and on-cloud with the same architecture. The local which can act as a master, can be synced with the cloud. This allows collaboration between internal and external users with selective privileges and access control.
  • The Workflow architecture is quite robust and scalable platform. The business users can create business processes easily without any technical knowledge.
  • The service integrations comprised in BPM paves the way to develop complex BPM solutions.

  • Seismic allows for one location to store all relevant content so that associates are not having to spend as much time searching for what they need.
  • Seismic provides the ability to fully customize content such that one template can serve many needs with the simple ability to answer questions that drive the customization in the content. This customization can range from simple to quite complex depending on your level of expertise with the tool.
  • Seismic provides a lot of flexibility when it comes to organizing your content and how to make the experience of accessing that content unique to the needs of each user in the system.

Cons

  • ECM and BPM have different licenses and different user interfaces. The users often gets confused about which one to use and it plays a bigger factor in deciding the ECM platform. The workflow engines in Alfresco are redundant, the inbuilt ECM has workflow engine and Alfresco offers activity product as BPM.
  • The UI development is little complicated, the knowledge of UI framework is required. These are not simple java technologies to learn.
  • Documentation of Alfresco really sucks. There is no single place to refer the architecture, development/deployment guides. The information is scattered across multiple websites with different login credentials.

  • The administrative tools for building LiveDocs in the system (customized content templates) are tedious, cumbersome, and inflexible. There are not a lot of customization options for the design of the LiveForm used to gather the user's inputs. The tools are built using outdated technology (Silverlight) and are very error prone when trying to do anything more than the most basic of functionality.
  • The sort order of documents/folders in the DocCenter is not flexible. For example, documents within a folder are always sorted alphanumerically but folders are always at the top of the list regardless of the name. Let's say we want to put 5 documents in a folder and then at the bottom of the list we'd like to have a folder titled "Other", that can't be done. The folder will always float to the top of the list, this is frustrating from a design perspective.
  • The built-in document usage reporting is difficult to use for our purposes.

Process was relatively smooth and overall, downtime minimal. MSI was very responsive to our needs and made the transition easier than it otherwise might have been.

SharePoint felt very cumbersome to update as well as for sales reps to access on-the-go. Also, I could not find another tool that allowed us to customize documents as seamlessly as Seismic.
