Alteryx Analytics

Alteryx can do so much more than I use it for, so I believe the only case where Alteryx wouldn't be needed is when a department/team had a full development team to prep data pre-analysis or already has a central data store fully stood up and standardized. Alteryx works extremely well with a multitude of BI and database solutions and would be a great fit for any team trying to speed up the typical daily grind of data prep and ETL so their analytics and data team can be more agile, accurate, and automated.

Gephi

Gephi is wonderfully suited for research and conducting follow-up social network analysis that GIS is too cumbersome for. It is less-well-suited for spatial statistical modeling, which is easier in programs like GeoDA, Stata, R, and GIS.

Pros

  • Blend multiple sources of data
  • Append or update existing data
  • Allows for powerful insights for non-technical users
Darrell Haley Jr. profile photo
  • Gephi's UI, built-in layout, and built-in clustering algorithms make it very easy to get started with (assuming you have some really data and real questions you want answered).
  • Gephi's force atlas layout algorithm and MCL (Louvain) clustering algorithm are both very fast, which I think is crucial for a data visualization tool, because it allows you to play with your data and do intuitive analysis.
  • Gephi's visualization is pretty (and intuitive), which helped me sell the clustering techniques to un-initiated and non-technical managers and executives.
  • Gephi has a pretty large community of support, so when I learn about other clustering algorithms/visualization techniques, it often already exists in a Gephi plug-in.

Cons

  • Alteryx seeks feedback from the user community. We regularly provide Alteryx with detailed requirements for supporting our data processing needs and Alteryx consistently delivers required functionality in their software updates.
  • Alteryx is rapidly expanding support for advanced analytics and delivery of consumable analytic tools. Alteryx can call other applications if necessary, but can also run R natively. Alteryx has been working both on expanding their delivered modeling toolset as well as enhancing their software to improve the performance of R.
  • While parallel processing is performed, there are times that I'd like to see more of it. Alteryx makes it easy to browse data within modules, but the browse output (tabular) is not readily filterable/sortable. Improvements to the user interface would be welcomed.
  • Alteryx allows users to schedule individual jobs for execution, but doesn't provide advanced scheduling tools to establish workflows where jobs executions have outside dependencies.

  • I (and many others) have had to expand Gephi's memory manually by experimenting with the configuration file. I'm glad it's possible, but it should be easier.
  • Gephi sometimes crashes inexplicably and loses your work, so I have developed a habit of explicitly exporting versions of my graphs as csv's, but I think this should be handled automatically in Gephi.
  • Because it is prone to crash, ideally, Gephi would help the user manage his/her use, by estimating processing and memory for very large tasks and prompting the user to confirm their requests before executing. Instead, I just tend to avoid certain functions.

We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

I will be renewing my use of Gephi if there is a requirement of this tool for work. Other than that I will not be using this tool in future.

Usability

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

Gephi is very intuitive and the fact that it shows its process helps the user understand what's going on. However, the animation features can really slow it down and there isn't a way to shut them off. Furthermore, the failures on saving mean you frequently have to start over. These problems disrupt the workflow and can be frustrating.

Reliability and Availability

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

I haven't used anything that is similar to Alteryx. MapInfo, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Teradata, etc. can only do their individual thing. Alteryx can do many, if not most (but not all) of the functions that these other programs can do. And much faster
Dan Chapman profile photo
R is probably stronger from a statistics, mechanics, and customization stand-point, and has some plug-ins for graph visualization, but it can still be a bit of a black box, whereas Gephi is built around graph visualization, allowing you to really play with the data, even showing you the intermediate steps of the layout algorithms, which helps you understand how Gephi is making sense of the data and how you can use it more effectively. Its clickable GUI also makes it much easier to discover its functions and its beautiful outputs makes it easy to sell ideas to the un-initiated

Collaboration and Sharing

Alteryx Analytics7.2
Based on 16 answers
Alteryx is great in terms of report sharing, since it allows us to email the files with the Email tool. This is the best ever easily implemented functionality with Alteryx. Also, formatting is easy in Alteryx - we can write data to templates and use the dynamic input tool for formatting purposes.

For individuals with Gephi installed, this is pretty easy to do. However, in our organization not many colleagues have this installed, so the only way to produce reports is with a screenshot or exported image file. This loses much of the interactivity of the software and many of the key insights that can be uncovered by playing with the nodes and edges.

I love Alteryx where it can merge data from multiple data sources. The output options are amazing and we can analyze the data however we want.

The upload process into Gephi is pretty streamlined. We upload csv files and the software is able to make the links easily and generate the graphs. The only way this could be better is if it connected directly to SAS, R, etc. or the databases themselves through SQL or a similar querying language (similar to Tableau)

Return on Investment

  • Definitely increased employee efficiency.
  • The company was able to offer more products to better serve the customers. Site selection with a click, more detailed segmentation, etc.
  • The program itself made the job more enjoyable. The ease of the software and also "Lego"-like interface made going to work fun.

  • I have only used the product for education purposes. I will not be the best person to provide details about ROI and business efficiency and customer service. I was personally very excited about the tool and am continuing my work on the tool.
