Anaconda

Anaconda is great for academic and private organizations that cannot afford more expensive Python/R package managers. Also, it is more appropriate for intermediate to advanced Python users--Anaconda can be somewhat frustrating for beginners, as it takes some practice to get comfortable with the workflow. I find it particularly useful for working in teams, because if everyone uses the same package manager, it is easier to troubleshoot issues and makes for reproducible research. For wealthier organizations, a premium package management system (with tech support) would be ideal. Anaconda is also great for people working independently on code development.

SAS Business Intelligence

SAS BI is a great BI tool as it incorporates the advantage of SAS which is proven to be robust over the years. SAS BI is more suitable for a relatively larger organization which is looking for self-service BI tools where most of the users are not technically proficient. Also, since license fee is an on a higher end, smaller organizations will find it hard to afford SAS.

Pros

  • Anaconda (i.e. Python with lots of packages and the fabulous iPython/Jupyter Notebook) does analytics well. In analytics, or "data science" or whatever buzzword, you have to pick your poison: Python, R, or SAS. Python is the only one that's good at doing other things as well.
  • Like the visualization...The quality of the built-in types of scientific visualization in Python vs. R and their aesthetics is up for grabs. However, Python can do a whole lot of different kinds of visualization above and beyond R. Similarly, JavaScript probably can do more/better visualization than Python, but it's not meant for analytics. Anaconda has enough visualization packages to get you started.

  • Collect and combine data from multiple sources. For example, data from the college database, the National Student Clearinghouse and our student services tracking software can combine to feed one report.
  • Condense millions of rows of data into a single, easy to use report. For example, we can produce a cube that is collapsed at a high level, and users can drill down to their area of interest in seconds.
  • Create interactive reports. It was important that our reports contained the ability for users to play with the data. They had to be able to filter large datasets, drag and drop comparison groups into graphs, and drill down to student-level data. SAS BI provided all of this and more.

Cons

  • It's still a little buggy. Especially the launcher.
  • It's not always easy to set up. It's not exactly difficult: a Google search away for most things, but silly stuff like path names, installing custom fonts and colors. That kind of thing.

  • It can be sometimes be little clunky
  • Need for seamless integration with more external softwares like R
  • Installation, maintenance and user management can be made more simpler

SAS really is the cutting edge in Business Intelligence. That is all they do! They are constantly coming out with new products, product upgrades, and their tech support is second to none. In addition, their support of Education has made our ability to acquire their product possible.

When you call tech support, you are immediately routed to a person who can answer your question. Often they can answer on the spot. However, if they cannot, you are given a track number and then followed up with. There have been times when I have had multiple track numbers open and they will actually TRACK YOU DOWN to ensure that your problem has been resolved. Issues do not fall into black holes with SAS. They are also willing to do a WebEx with you to diagnose the problem by seeing your environment, which is always helpful.

Simple story. I tried both. Canopy felt somehow unintuitive to use.

It makes collaboration easy by letting people comment on charts and reports and then let others also contribute with their comments. It also has the feature to schedule the delivery of reports via email to designated users which makes it easy for them to remain updated even on the go rather than opening other applications or checking the report on the web for the same.

We easily present data from various data sources via a consistent user interface. Our numerous data models can now be presented to our users using a consistent reporting interface. This has allowed our technical team to provide a much improved level of service to our end-users for the purpose of reporting.

Return on Investment

  • We save a lot of programming time, since all the add-ons are in the same environment.
  • Being multiplatform, Anaconda is perfect for work teams with many people, since it supports all operating systems.
  • The only negative thing that can happen is that at first, the way of working in Anaconda can be a bit confusing. Once passed the learning period, its daily use is very comfortable.

  • Positive Impact: better customer service. We have been able to deliver reports that will help multiple employees and implement any feedback they have on those reports quickly.
  • Positive Impact: increased inter-departmental discussions. We have long had a problem working in silos. Now we are pulling data from multiple departments into one report, and it becomes easy to see how what one department is doing in affecting another. We had a meeting to discuss a preliminary report on course scheduling efficiency. It included data from our Facilities folks and our academic Deans. Once we put the numbers up on the screen, there spawned a helpful discussion about how what one department can do to help another.
  • Positive Impact: organizational transparency. For the first time, our users are exposed to a wealth of data about themselves and other areas of the college. It is starting to make some question the way we do business, and if there is a better way.
