Anaplan

It's great for complex models that require frequent updates and instant feedback. That describes most planning situations I know of. It's great for organizations that want to change plans and models independent of IT support or programming. It's not a great reporting or analytics tool. Ad-hoc analysis is a non-starter in the platform--you have to be a model builder and the process of generating a report is very cumbersome compared with something like Tableau.

Aviso Insights

It is great if you are working in a sales environment where you need to keep track of your deals and sales pipeline. It's not an application for a company that only has a small sales force, where deals can be tracked manually.

Pros

  • Hyperbloc architecture -- the ability to see changes to models instantly cascade through all the models.
  • Function agnostic platform - the ability to adapt the platform to many different use cases and integrate those use cases into a connected planning environment.
  • Cloud architecture. Security and product enhancements come automatically.

  • It is very accurate in predicting the outcome of our sales numbers.
  • It is useful when doing deal reviews with our sales agents, we can see which deals are needed to prioritize and our next action item.
  • It integrates seamlessly with our CRM, it pulls data from it that we use for deal and pipeline reviews.

Cons

  • Some functions I occasionally used in Excel are not yet available in Anaplan - SUBTOTAL and CODE primarily. Also the ability to highlight multiple adjacent cells and instantly see a sum, count or average.
  • We are on a prior pricing model with Anaplan and it makes it difficult to expand the use cases. I believe this is resolved in the new pricing model. Also, depending on the pricing, small tasks/projects may not be cost effective to move out of Excel and into Anaplan if the users are numerous and not already in Anaplan.
  • Extracting data out of Anaplan is not always straightforward. It is terrific for a user who has access to Anaplan but if a user wants to pull data out for another purpose or to share with non users it is limited. There are links to XLS and PPT but those only go so far.

  • It would be great if we are able to customize it fully, there is more information from our CRM that we can use to have more insights on our pipeline reviews.

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Reliability and Availability

In nearly 3 years, I have only had 1 issue of being unable to access my model for an unplanned maintenance. Even planned maintenance windows are handled during low traffic hours on the weekend.

Performance

Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

In-Person Training

The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

Alternatives Considered

Anaplan user case was easy to pull together on our own without consultants. The other tools were more complex to understand and set up.Cost-wise it stacked up nicely against other tools as well

We were using Aviso and were approached by Clari. We reviewed Clari and went through a POC but still decided to stay with Aviso due to their flexibility in working with the data from Salesforce. Clari required us to create specific fields within Salesforce in order to push the data into the application. Whereas with Aviso, it did not matter what Salesforce object the data was on, they were able to pull the data in to the application without any customization in Salesforce itself.

Lines of Business and Business Impact

Anaplan has allowed a small FP&A team to manage the growth in demands from the business without expanding the team saving significant staff costs.The ability to quickly distribute one version of the truth for reporting and forecasting is very valuable to the company. Visibility and ease of access to key performance indicators for key stakeholders is essential.

Scalability

It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

  • Workforce Planning efficiency - so much easier than excel to maintain sensitive information planning
  • Long range plan lead time - the old excel model took weeks to update. The Anaplan model takes hours
