Anaplan

Anaplan is great for Sales Ops, FP&A, and basically anything that is heavy Excel-based. It's great at summarizing large amounts of data, like pivot tables. It's also great for crunching Salesforce data. I don't have a need for SQL, but I'm sure it would great for any kind of database summarization use case.

Host Analytics

Host Analytics may not be appropriate for companies with a large number of allocations. We find allocations to be somewhat overly burdensome, especially if it is based on percentages that are constantly changing, yet not able to be referenced in Host Analytics. Also, if you need precise workflow, this may not be the right tool

Pros

  • We really like the Data Hub concept. We are working on multiple projects with regards to aggregating data from multiple sources, and Data Hub has worked well for us thus far.
  • Agility is key for our businesses and we feel that Anaplan gives us the ability to remain flexible and reactive to the changes throughout our businesses.
  • As a administrator I really like the resources provided by Anaplan such as Anapedia. It makes it really simple to ask questions and find answers if we are having difficulty with certain items.
Matthew Cantwell profile photo
  • Ability to roll from one period's scenario to another. Leveraging templates designed once, they can be deployed to many entities and to a new scenario quickly without hardly any prep work. Spreadsheets required manual updating of many tabs and with new data. This is more seamless.
  • Ability to shift a forecast scenario to have a new month of actuals and overwrite previously forecasted info with actual results.
  • Flexibility to design templates and budget entities around the needed process from an input, roll-up, and approval process. Allocations can also be semi-automated using a template structure to integrate inputs from other units or departments to drive other calculations.
  • Reporting is fully customizable to be automatic and streamlined once built.

Cons

  • The dashboard functionality is basic therefore, we have to bring in Tableau to provide a more professional view of the outputs as well as to allow management to more easily slice and dice data.
  • There is an Anaplan learning center however, I have not found it useful when I have questions. We are fortunate to have Aviana Global guiding us through the initial phases of our process. Without our consultants, learning Anaplan would be overwhelming.
  • The Anaplan Connect needs to be improved. We are considering a third party ETL, but we prefer that Anaplan have this capability built into its platform.
Tara Kirby profile photo
  • Reporting can be very technical in nature. Once built it is very powerful but maintenance takes a strong programmatic mindset.
  • While most anything is possible in Host's ability to be customized to meet specific needs, a tangled web can be designed that requires good administrative know how of key power users to know where to look when something strange occurs. The tools are there to do it but sometimes complexity is needed to drive and automate.
  • Seeding of scenarios can be finicky and something that has to be well understood before proceeding. While seeding is powerful and essential to easy routine in forecasting, knowing what not to do on initial builds of templates will help. Sometimes templates get built with a get the data in mindset but not to facilitate seeding so that needs to be better understood before building templates goes too far.

I don't think we could function without the collaboration capabilities built into Anaplan that replaced disparate Excel files in the workforce planning model

We will renew. The system has lived up to its expectations. Although we want additional functionality (and they are working on it) we are 100 times better than we were on Excel.

Usability

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Overall the system is easy to use, our users have picked it up fairly easily with minimal training. And we have conducted yearly surveys since implementation and user acceptance is high.

Reliability and Availability

In nearly 3 years, I have only had 1 issue of being unable to access my model for an unplanned maintenance. Even planned maintenance windows are handled during low traffic hours on the weekend.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Support

Anaplan8.1
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

Everyone is very responsive and is willing to jump on a call to help. We set up weekly calls with our CFL representative during the first month of Go-Live. This really helped us solve problems before they got out of hand. When using the Community, I also see representatives on there answering questions

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

Be sure you understand all the language in the initial contract as to what is included and what is not. The BRDD document although more detailed and also a signed document is not a contract and Host will not necessarily honor that document.Be sure your solutions architect has been with Host awhile and done numerous other implementations. The better qualified they are the better your implementation will go.Do you own homework, and be ready with your own documentation on process, what your proposed dimensions are and fields with the data to populate them.

Alternatives Considered

Honestly, having implemented Anaplan at another company, I knew it would suit our needs here and convinced management to get the tool on that basis. We already use a mix of Cognos BI, Tableau, and Excel ... but our need was something apart from what those can provide.

Host Analytics provides similar functionality without the hardware and software maintenance requirements. As a mid size company, it also provided a more cost effective solution for us.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

Return on Investment

  • Workforce Planning efficiency - so much easier than excel to maintain sensitive information planning
  • Long range plan lead time - the old excel model took weeks to update. The Anaplan model takes hours

  • For our organization, Host has provided a very cost effective and detailed planning tool. It is very important for our revenue projections to be accurate and Host has provided us with the tool to do this.
