Apache Drill

if you're doing joins from hBASE, hdfs, cassandra and redis, then this works.Using it as a be all end all does not suit it. This is not your straight forward magic software that works for all scenarios. One needs to determine the use case to see if Apache Drill fits the needs. 3/4 of the time, usually it does.

Hortonworks Data Platform

We used Hortonworks within our Medical Informatics department to validate possibility of using big data tools and platforms in the field of patient monitoring and near-real time pattern detection. Although our efforts weren't in production, it was demonstrated that Hortonworks provides good computational efficiency, stability to be used in a mission critical businesses such as healthcare services and patient care

Pros

  • queries multiple data sources with ease.
  • supports sql, so non technical users who know sql, can run query sets
  • 3rd party tools, like tableau, zoom data and looker were able to connect with no issues

  • HDP keeps up-to pace with the Apache Hadoop.
  • HDP's Ambari is intuitive and easy to use.
  • HDP remains similar to most open source tools and hence makes the learning curve gentler.

Cons

  • deployment. Not as easy
  • configuration isn't as straight forward, especially with the documentation
  • Garbage collection could be improved upon

  • Since it doesn't come with propriety tools for big data management, additional integration is need (for query handling, search, etc).
  • It was very straightforward to store clinical data without relations, such as data from sensors of a medical device. But it has limitations when needed to combine the data with other clinical data in structured format (e.g. lab results, diagnosis).
  • Overall look and feel of front-end management tools (e.g. monitoring) are not good. It is not bad but it doesn't look professional.

if Presto comes up with more support (ie hbase, s3), then its strongly possible that we'll move from apache drill to prestoDB. However, Apache drill needs more configuration ease, especially when it comes to garbage collection tuning. If apache drill could support also sparkSQL and Flume, then it does change drill into being something more valuable than prestoDB

Alternatives Considered

compared to presto, has more support than prestodb.Impala has limitations to what drill can supportapache phoenix only supports for hbase. no support for cassandra. Apache drill was chosen, because of the multiple data stores that it supports htat the other 3 do not support. Presto does not support hbase as of yet. Impala does not support query to cassandra

Cloudera has been often compared to Hortonworks. We considered the both products and decided to try Hortonworks data platform, by several reasons. One of them was pricing and technical support. Generally speaking Cloudera outperforms Hortonworks in terms of functionalities, but Hortonworks was easy to learn for our first-time use big data analysts and developer. Its tutorials were great as well.

Return on Investment

  • Configuration has taken some serious time out.
  • Garbage collection tuning. is a constant hassle. time and effort applied to it, vs dedicating resources elsewhere.
  • w/ sql support, reduces the need of devs to generate the resultset for analysts, when they can run queries themselves (if they know sql).

  • My company is expanding our scope of data science area from traditional structured data (coded diagnosis, medication, etc) to unstructured data. Use of Hortonworks in ICU data monitoring was a good demonstration of that possibility.
  • Hortonworks data platform is a fully open source product and well aligned with out development culture.
  • Hortonworks business people and engineers are supportive and open minded. They played certain role of successful use of Hortonworks.
