From my experience, I find that the ASR 1000s are excellent equipment to use in an MPLS network as a route reflector. ASR 1000s are also very good as a WAN aggregation router. WAN aggregation capable of supporting multiple Gigabit connections

    Cons

    Cisco

    • The ASR 1000 series routers can, as with most devices, improve with additional memory capacity and upgraded chip sets for faster processing.
    • There seems to be limitations on the number of routing sessions the smaller ASR devices can handle, which can be overcome with proper planning and placement within the network.

    • Identifying the source of an issue and fixing it can be challenging. Some of the problems that develop in Exchange are not obvious, even to seasoned administrators.
    • The hardware and, more significantly, the software needed for such exchange are expensive.
    • You don't want a newbie to put this up or manage it. Skilled administrators with knowledge of Microsoft Exchange are required.

        Cisco

All our modular contingency service exercises use this equipment, it allows us to perform this type of exercises very easily, in a controlled and effective way. It is used at least once a month for these types of events. It also allows configuration replication in computers that are under the same model.

Microsoft Exchange is well suited for inexperienced Messaging Admins and veterans alike. If you have no idea of the fundamentals of modern email (SMTP, mail headers, MX Records, SPF/DKIM, Encryption, etc.) and just need to get people's mailboxes and calendars the support they need, you can use it with confidence. If you are an old pro and want to leverage and dovetail your Powershell and AD with Exchange, you will be rewarded for your efforts.

        Cisco

We did not heavily engage with the Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Router (ASR1000) support function as we decide to switch the solution to a more cost-effective option, and this was primarily a price decision vs. any support related decision.

We have a good enterprise agreement with Microsoft which affords us quick phone support. I have found the support staff knowledgeable and prompt with a solution when required. At times it may be difficult to schedule a call back, this is mainly due to our need for calls early in the morning which happens to be during a shift change at Microsoft support.

Implementation/conversion can be quite complex and, unless you have certified Exchange administrators in-house, you should strongly consider a 3rd party consultant for this implementation.

        Alternatives Considered

        Cisco

Before standardizing on the Cisco ASR 1000 we had explored the idea of using Juniper routers. Ultimately we felt the Cisco ASR 1000 was a better fit at the time. We have been very happy with this decision, but it might not be the right decision for everyone. It fit our environment and our needs very well, Juniper is also a very good choice.

Microsoft Exchange Product The best cloud-based enterprise-grade archiving platform with a host of features that enable files to be securely archived and retrieved with advanced search options. This tool is very easy to use and has a User-friendly interface. It is a highly reliable platform that allows all employees to automatically store their data without any limitations. It offers a cost-effective solution with customized policy management. We are happy that the customer support team is always fast and concerned, and the product's uninterrupted service experience. It is very good that it stores data in real-time without losing it, even in the event of a disaster. The cost-effective solution and integration with other tools are seamless.

        Return on Investment

        Cisco

        • It is a healthy return on investment with planned packed size data. Average unicast latency is low and consistent with small and large packets (barring mid-sized).
        • Cisco devices last longer and also have a decent trade-in policy to recover some value when equipment is replaced.
        • Higher concurrent IPSec tunnels are offered, we tested for 1500+, fielding both encrypted and a mix of encrypted and cleartext traffic.

        Microsoft

        • After testing I found Exchange very good at removing/quarantining malware.
        • The Global Address List is great for finding the correct person within the organization to deal with.
        • The Clutter feature is terrible. Sometimes putting important emails into that folder for no discernible reason.
