Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

These work very well at the WAN edge, it may be costly for some. In which case, it may be worth considering an ISR if all the features or performance of the ASR 1000 are not needed. It works very well in a multi-gig environment regardless of the implementations we have done so far. These also work well at the edge or for smaller cores. I would recommend assessing your needs and checking the documentation to see whether or not this particular router will work for you or if it's overkill. In some cases, a significant amount of money can be saved by going with an ISR (if you still want to stick with Cisco). For data center core or similar environment, these might not be appropriate and I would recommend exploring other models such as ASR 9000.

Microsoft Exchange

Microsoft Exchange is very well suited for larger organizations that have offices spread across the globe. This way all staff can still access their mailboxes from any where. But for smaller individual offices, it may be more advantageous to just sign on to a web service to access email instead of Microsoft Exchange.

Pros

Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

  • In most cases, the larger ASR routers such as the 1006 and 1009s have sufficient capabilities to be used as a Core network router.
  • The smaller ASRs such as the 1002 devices are best suited on the edge, capable of handling a limited number of connections due to the fixed chassis.

Microsoft Exchange

  • [Microsoft] Exchange is the gold standard for Corporate email. It is flawless in maintaining and delivering email to all of our users. It has been around so long the thing it does the best is just work. Most of the flaws and bugs are already out of the system.
  • The GUI management tools for MS Exchange, whether Online or on-premise, are fairly well documented and for the most part fairly easy to use.
  • [Microsoft] Exchange gives you the option to have an all in one box solution. Its not recommended but for smaller shops its a nice alternative to a more extensive setup that requires multiple servers.
  • If sized correctly, MS Exchanges is fine tuned out of the box to be fairly quick and responsive as to email delivery.

Cons

Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

  • Licensing on the routers is more complicated than it needs to be. We have the ASR routers along with ISR routers both have the license of the advanced service, however, on the ISR routers that license did not include the app-X feature needed to send the application specific net-flow data we wanted. It would be better if Cisco was consistence with the features included with licenses.
  • Some software patches are quite involved as there is a boot loaded and IOS that must be upgraded.

Microsoft Exchange

  • Some of our customers have asked for a feature called 'plus addressing'. This is widely used in the Linux/Gmail email systems but is not available on Exchange.
  • Inbox rules. The basics are there, however, there is some need for a more robust method of catching and sorting email. Some rule editors include a RegEx editor that would allow for this.
  • As of a few years ago, MS has been focusing more on their development efforts on their cloud solution and now so much on the on-premises application. Most feel that the new features do not make it to the on-prem application, forcing corporations to migrate to the cloud.
  • Anti-SPAM and AntiVirus. MS Exchange has never done a great job of keeping the bad email out of the system. This has opened up an opportunity for other companies to take advantage of selling an email firewall to catch a bad email before reaching Exchange.

All our modular contingency service exercises use this equipment, it allows us to perform this type of exercises very easily, in a controlled and effective way. It is used at least once a month for these types of events. It also allows configuration replication in computers that are under the same model.

We did not heavily engage with the Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Router (ASR1000) support function as we decide to switch the solution to a more cost-effective option, and this was primarily a price decision vs. any support related decision.

We have a good enterprise agreement with Microsoft which affords us quick phone support. I have found the support staff knowledgeable and prompt with a solution when required. At times it may be difficult to schedule a call back, this is mainly due to our need for calls early in the morning which happens to be during a shift change at Microsoft support.

Implementation/conversion can be quite complex and, unless you have certified Exchange administrators in-house, you should strongly consider a 3rd party consultant for this implementation.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

The Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000) don't go against the alternatives I've used, but make a great combination of devices, and configuring them alongside each other makes it very easy to administer the whole network. Configuring VLANs across them and setting up policies can be done via CLI or web interfaces, or even using third-party softwares that get along really well with all of them.

Microsoft Exchange

There is nothing I've seen in any organization I've been part of in over 20 years that's been used in place as the corporate solution for email. The standardization of Exchange across nearly all major corporations and government agencies is near complete I not really aware of any viable alternatives. There is Yahoo or Google, but these are not used by anyone I've worked for so no really things to compare against.

Return on Investment

Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 1000)

  • It is a healthy return on investment with planned packed size data. Average unicast latency is low and consistent with small and large packets (barring mid-sized).
  • Cisco devices last longer and also have a decent trade-in policy to recover some value when equipment is replaced.
  • Higher concurrent IPSec tunnels are offered, we tested for 1500+, fielding both encrypted and a mix of encrypted and cleartext traffic.

Microsoft Exchange

  • There have been hiccups and downtime with our on-premise installation but overall the local installation has saved us money in the long run versus paying a monthly fee for ~125 mailboxes.
  • Our internet service likes to take mid-day breaks every so often. Having a local Exchange server allows us to continue to communicate internally and manage meetings, presentation, and other events at our site.
  • Despite the overall good that Exchange has provided our organization it is a time suck. Managing the server, spam appliance, backups, and storage space is a constant battle and has taken away from some of our other initiatives. This is not specific to Exchange but any on-premise email server.
