Cisco ASA

CISCO ASA is suitable for every organization from MID range to HIGH RANGE. However, for small customers, they can buy Cisco product but support cost will be the challenge. However nowadays one tool is never enough, but Cisco gives us a unified way of managing infra with there different solutions. I agree they are more stable products comparing any products which are available in the Market.

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

It is good hardware with advanced security features known as Next Generation that can be purchased through license subscriptions. I recommend to use it in the edge scenario of the internet. It is great to offer protection to the internal network, servers, PCs, sensitive data and to offer the remote service to company users remotely from the use of an SLL VPN. It is important to measure the number of users and the speed of internet links to find the right Cisco ASA model for your scenario.

Pros

Cisco ASA

  • Consistent commands. A lot of the general commands used on other Cisco switches and routers also work here, making it easy script common tasks and changes across multiple devices without having to switch command structure.
  • Processing power. The ASA is incredibly fast and doesn't introduce much if any latency.

  • Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services have a variety of networking features including NextGen, web content filtering, data analysis, high availability failover, packet inspection, context-based ACL, and other features to protect your networks.

Cons

Cisco ASA

  • The gui interface is good, but often lacks the ability to perform full tasks without command line.
  • Integration with other products can be complicated and you may need to find the custom commands from the 3rd party or support to make it work.
  • A lot of their advanced features are present, but aren't fully integrated yet.

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

  • Performance when using FirePower services make the unit slow
  • Capacity of what the FirePower services need
  • The interface is better than ASDM but these still need ASDM and that can be a challenge to get the correct Java version loaded
  • Certain 5500-X models are different than previous versions with no switchport options

I am committed to low-OpEx usage model, know most (nearly all) hw and sw features and have a good customer base to continue to use Cisco ASA.

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER is very good for a middle-sized organization and you will not face any issue deployment in the existing network. But, GUI is not good so you have to go with CLI for fast work. The main advantage of Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER is the technical support and lots of easy documentation and training videos for implementation and configuration. URL filtering is also not the best because it syncs with the bright cloud website. Sometimes, URLs detected in the wrong category.

The support is usually very good and gets back to you very quickly. However I had some instances of when two engineers will give me wildly different answers to what I thought was a simple question. Overall however I do rate the support highly and they are generally always very good.

I always say this (based upon my experiences) Cisco has the best support both onsite and offsite. Cisco does the RMA of faulty device within the defined 24 hours. And their TAC support is very good as it's also available in India. Overall, I would say Cisco has the best Customer Support.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco ASA

Cisco made sense from the standpoint that my engineers already knew it and there was little learning curve. Personally, I prefer a purpose-built hardware solution. Untangle is not ready for the enterprise as a whole but works great to do web/application filtering . Checkpoint and Palo are VERY high cost and have few support options

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

I used pfSense open-source tool in which technical support and documentation is not available like Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services firewall. so I choose ASA just because this version of cisco ASA is really offering new advanced-level security in the normal budget for my organization.

Return on Investment

Cisco ASA

  • We've gotten every penny's worth of use with our Cisco ASA firewalls - they were a few thousand dollars to purchase, even in HA, and have been in production for over 5 years
  • I'm glad that when the Cisco ASA IKE buffer overflow vulnerability was released, Cisco provided a code update, even though the 8.2-series code was EOL. This saved us and many companies from scrambling and spending big $ and time to put a workaround in.

Cisco ASA 5500-X with FirePOWER Services

  • As an integrated appliance, we saved costs on getting other security technologies.
  • It provided secure access to our remote users, saving costs and time as our users could get access to the network anywhere and anytime.
  • Since we have other Cisco devices, integration was seamless.
  • Integration with Active Directory meant we did not need to create addition user accounts.
