Highlights

Cohesity and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery are both data center backup solutions designed to help organizations secure business data. Cohesity sports a simple to use interface that allows for data management from one panel.  For small businesses, Cohesity provides a simple to use software that can scale.  Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is most popular with mid-sized businesses that can use automation tools to reduce the demand on IT staff.

Features

Cohesity and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery both help organizations with data security and restoration but they also have a few standout features that set them apart from each other.

Cohesity offers a simple to use interface that allows businesses to manage all of their data from a single panel.  This makes Cohesity a good choice for organizations with a lot of data sources that need to be backed up. Cohesity also offers a pay as you grow model that allows the software to scale as a business grows.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides robust, enterprise level features for consolidating data silos.  Additionally, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides automation tools supported by a proprietary artificial intelligence. These features allow businesses to expedite and automate processes like data archiving that are normally time consuming.

Limitations

Though Cohesity and Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery can both backup data, they also have a few limitations that are important to consider.

Cohesiry offers a simple interface and support for multiple data sources, but it lacks automation features.  As businesses grow the amount of data they store, processes like archiving can become time intensive and demanding on small teams.  Additionally, Cohesity doesn’t include as many advanced features for consolidating siloed data.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery provides enterprise level features, but can be expensive for smaller organizations, even with pay-as-you-grow options.  Additionally, Commvault provides automation features but isn’t as simple to use as Cohesity.  Businesses looking for a simple to use data backup solution may consider other options.

Pricing

Pricing for Cohesity is dependent on the amount of data stored, as well as the number of virtual machines backed up.  Businesses can expect to pay at least $300,000 over five years, with price increasing as storage needs increase.

Commvault does not provide exact pricing for Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery, though interested businesses can reach out to the vendor for a quote.

Likelihood to Recommend

Cohesity

Cohesity is best suited for a highly virtualized environment, although they do have agents for bare metal. But who runs non-virtualized workloads these days anyhow? Not any organization which would invest in best class backup, anyhow. We find that the search features make file-level restores so much easier -- now a partial filename is all we need to get going, and we can see a file's change history by date so we no longer have to hunt for the last changed version. You will want 10GB network capability for this solution to really shine -- each node has dual SFP+ connections for data.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

I feel that Commvault's Active Directory Recovery and Testing of the recovery could be improved, but this could very well be a situation where I am not fully understanding the scope. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is spot-on in all other areas and will be a perfect fit for anyone with a decent-sized IT footprint.

Pros

Cohesity

  • Easy to use and setup new backup and restore jobs.
  • Extremely fast recovery time, can spin a VMware backup VM up in well under a minute.
  • Granular recovery search options, easy to find specific files or systems to recover (or SQL DB).

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • Commvault is the Swiss Army knife for data protection in an Enterprise environment. You name the environment and Commvvault has something to protect it. Very helpful in this on-prem/off-prem world that is developing into a DevOps world.
  • Improves our Disaster Recovery
  • Starting to utilize for data migration for VMware in places where Zerto is too expensive

Cons

Cohesity

  • Replication performance - We needed support to provide some customizations in order to get our replication to work properly to another offsite cluster. We have been told that this issue is fixed in the newest general release.
  • Support - I would characterize the support as very good, but in a few instances I could tell my support agent needed to go higher up his chain to get clarification on features. I believe Cohesity is rapidly growing their support infrastructure as they put more hardware in the field.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery has developed the concept of plans that work great in smaller institutions but can hamstring large enterprises by the limited flexibility. There are situations where plans appear to be forced into decisions. Ideally, providing the ability to disable plans would be beneficial.
  • The security model is granular in respects to permissions and ability to implement it for a single object (client, user, job). Implementing the correct collection of permissions can sometimes feel like opening a padlock. This appears to be a great place to implement a wizard for guiding administrators through desired behaviors and building the appropriate security role.

It is serving it's purpose and for companies that have a smaller IT staff, it is not time consuming to manage. Support for the product when needed has been very good and they are responsive when tickets are opened for support. The product is scalable so as we grow we can easily increase the resources as needed on the backend.

The user interface is very intuitive and gives a good overview of the status of your backup jobs. Its a full html5 environment which can be used in very browser and is available on every device through the use of private connections to the office. When going to implement Cohesity it is as easy as putting it in the rack and configuring your network. The environment does the rest. Once configured new nodes can be added by configuring them with the correct network. We use it in a VMware vCenter environment with vCloud Director on top. Since the latest version vCloud Director is an official source for your backups. This means that resoring to vCloud Director is a posibility as well. This makes the multi-tenancy and self service capability for our users an easy to use function. It can be implemented as a plugin within the Cloud portal for users to leverage. The path to vCloud Director support took a while but now that we are there I can give it an 8.

They product is built very well with all the features and support to different types of data but as an end user it is not simple to explore the server. Not easy to setup the features and make it operational as compared to the other competitor in the market.

They are always friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The support is easy to reach and the reaction times are on point. Several times I had called with my system being down and the person who answered the call would require a support rep call me back. Some of these call backs would be 1-2 hours later. When needed, the support will scale up to deliver the right support for the right cases. When asking for detailed information about a problem they always help you to understand the problem and the underlying causes better.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery support is a Gold Standard for us. We are a ESP customer and have a designated Support Account Manager (SAM) & a Technical Account Manager (TAM) who we meet with every other week to go over any existing issues and upcoming version revisions release. But of course not all companies or organization will need this type of level of support but we have proven that this works for us due to the shear size of our environment and the number of offices we support.

Plan well and make sure you collect all the required information and details before going for implementation. Organize it in step by step or break the setup into different modules to make it simple.

Alternatives Considered

Cohesity

We looked at Veeam and although it's a great product when we priced out the licensing of both primary and disaster datacenters it became much too expensive.Rubrik is a great product and very similar to Cohesity. In the end, Cohesity had a secondary storage play as well as a better UI and better compatibility with lower tier cloud storage. We also like the way Cohesity did protection jobs vs Rubrik's virtual machine centric backup.CommVault is a product we still use today due to its massive features and the ability for bare metal backups. Cohesity does a much better job in the area of UI simplicity, virtual backup ease, and ease of management.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

I was not part of the decision to adopt Commvault, and having developed and used many other backup/recovery tools I was a little skeptical that it could do everything that we needed, but I can say that I'm glad that they chose Commvault. It has delivered even more than we had counted on.

Return on Investment

Cohesity

  • It has freed up 40 hours a month of our service desk staff since they were able to stop focusing so intently on tape management.
  • We have gained time back on the engineers since they are not working tickets 10 hours a week just on backup issues.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • The ease of use and reliability of Commvault have enabled us to support the entire environment with less personnel than other products. We can support hundreds of clients and 500TB of protected systems with a single person.
  • Their per TB pricing can get rather expensive often forcing you into an agent based pricing model and that can be less that ideal to mange.
