Countly
Countly is wonderful. It mhas affordable options for startups that are experimenting with event and market-tracking services that can't afford more expensive services but do have the cloud credits to operate Countly. For later-stage companies that have the money, but not the time to set up a service like this, a service like Amplitude, Segment, or Mixpanel may be a better alternative.

Matomo Analytics (formerly Piwik)
This software can be installed manually or via a third party installer. Those less happy with coding may prefer to check availability of Piwik via the web host before choosing it as a preferred option. That aside, the important issue when choosing any analytics package is whether it tracks the range of data that you need. Piwik is very rich in this respect.

- Piwik does a great job of allowing customized campaign tracking to try and hit marketing or funding goals.
- The robust plugin architecture allows for a large amount of custom development to track very specific needs. The availability of a REST API also allows you to build in support for Piwik to your in-house applications which can enable developers to track bugs with more precision.
- The dashboard structure allows you to create specialized views for specific user roles so that you can give a specific focus to a small subsection of the reported data. This is an excellent way to show non-technical users only the portion of the data they are interested in without getting bogged down into the details.

Countly
- Bad UI - The UI is quite outdated and poorly designed, which was one of the principal reasons for us moving away from Countly.
- Some poor documentation - 3rd-party documentation and tutorials for some of their mobile SDKs are better than Countly's own documentation.
- Server requirements can be a bit high - For startups with trial credits on cloud computing services, this may not be a problem. Otherwise, Countly can get as expensive as hosted services like Segment and Mixpanel.

- I wish there were some additional pre-formatted tiles/tabs to choose from
- Creating custom data sets for tiles/tabs is not straightforward and there isn't much in the way of explanations on how to do it
- I have clicked the "WP-Piwik - SEO" button in setting/statistics but can't seem to get the data to populate. Again, not much in the way of "Help" on the site to assist in figuring it out.

Given, that I do not make a decision wherever to buy the product, I think the biggest culprit would be name recognition (that Piwik currently lacks compared to Google Analytics and such). Also, not to put it into negative light, but being "free" raises eyebrows, as being a lesser software

Piwik succeeds in presenting me (and my associates and my clients...) large amounts of data in a user friendly way. The interface and functionality can easily be customized. While some enhancements do need technical background (API calls by programming language from the webserver or javascript), others are easy to use (goal / event tracking)

Countly practically does everything you need it to do. However, it can have challenges of its own sometimes.

The best thing about the Matomo support is that they have a forum which basically you can find the answer to almost all of your questions and most of the time you don't need to contact them regarding your questions and problems but if you need help they will answer in a reasonable time slots.

Only one hiccup when we were using a beta installation. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Matomo has poor integrations and SDK support compared to Countly. It is also significantly harder to set up compared to Countly. There have also been complaints about Matomo having security flaws. Additionally, Matomo seemed to lack common analytics platform features, like segmentation, and tracking/downloading raw data. These features are very easy to use in Countly and are usually a necessity for most companies.

With Matomo Analytics you have total control of your platform, whereas with Google Analytics you never know how they'll be using your data. Being an open source platform allows you to build plugins and themes for this great platform. Some of the users have already build some plugins freely available and some are commercial.

- We can see the analytics of our web applications and thus having the insight of the systems' behavior.
- It helps in improving the performance and scalability of our web application.
- It helps us improve the user experience on our sites; seeing the user's activity we can take decisions to make it better.
- A cost-effective tool, since it is free.
