Darktrace

Darktrace would be well suited to any environment really; the only constraint would be the budget. The cost scales on the number of devices to be monitored by the product, so it can be quite expensive in larger environments. Any company that would benefit from having 24/7 monitoring of their network would find that this product would suit that need perfectly. It can also create a number of reports, which is useful if you have any requirement to present periodic figures and statistics for your network. There are also additional features available and in development such as Antigena, which can be configured to allow potential threats to be automatically mitigated; it can block connections to a certain address, using certain ports, or it can enforce "normal behaviour" where it will only allow a machine to communicate in a way that Darktrace has observed before and considers normal. This has huge benefits particularly for 24/7 organisations where you don't have the ability to have someone monitoring the network personally at all times, as it could stop a malware outbreak in its tracks.

In scenarios where you are just trying to block specific types of data based on a rule, it can be used very effectively.If you are trying to use fingerprinting to classify data, Forcepoint is not well suited for this. You would need a separate technology in order to classify data appropriately.

  • It did an ok job of analyzing and collecting data. It used a span (mirrored) port and then using its own algorithm developed flow records.
  • It did an ok job of segmenting traffic into networks - not always correctly, but ok.
  • It tried to identify devices by type - once again, it did ok, but not that great.

  • It is a very complete solution that addresses a wide range of different security issues and it does it well.
  • Forcepoint's Technical Support is on the ball. They have improved greatly over the last 3 years.
  • The level of professionalism from Forcepoint really completes the picture.

Darktrace

  • False positives. Darktrace uses "AI" to create its alerts for "unusual" or "malicious" activity. It is very common to see an alert for completely benign and normal device behavior - PC tries to print for the first time in a while, for example.
  • Antigena actions. To some extent, this is a continuation of the previous point. Darktrace can break the network connectivity of the suspected device automatically. The excessive number of false positives makes administrators reluctant to use this feature, though. Also, the default Antigena actions are not relevant to real-world problems as I saw them in my experience with Darktrace.

  • Remote filtering is not as advanced as we would like.
  • Support time is not as quick as needed in most cases.
  • Upgrades of appliances and software is not as easy as other solutions.
  • HTTPS inspection needs to hand a valid cert and doesnt work correctly with all vendors.

We have been fairly happy with the product and how it has worked. We have looked at other vendors for url filter and such and have not found one that meets our needs or does what we have been doing with Websense. The product has been fairly stable and we have only had a few issues in the past. We have all seen that it was one of the highest leaders from the Gartner Group Magic Quadrant for Web Gateways.

Any time I have had any issue with Darktrace, I've been able to contact an engineer through their support desk, and I have always had a very speedy response. Even when the issue has been caused by something outside of the Darktrace devices, they have still been very keen to try to help and identify what the problem was. The customer portal also has a large number of videos and guides that you can use to educate yourself on the product

Because we've brought our problem of inexplicable web traffic disruption and they effectively ceased working with our troubleshooting team even though we'd eliminated other avenues as the potential source of the problem. Once they stopped helping us look for a problem, their product became less appealing as the long-term solution. They may claim to want to be "my" (or "your") partner, but partners need to stick it out beyond the "traffic looks good from my perspective" attitude. They need to help us figure out what we're doing differently that could negatively impact business.

We have tried out Office 365 and Trend Micro DLP but those solutions have not worked out as we hoped. That said, when we looked at Forcepoint Data Loss Prevention, there were only minor issues we came across that did not have any negative impact and overall, the solution was what we needed.

  • The weekly reports more than pay for itself within the first few months.
  • The powerful search capability helps us solve problems where other solutions fall short.

  • The exchange of financial documents with customers creates extreme risk as data loss could result in financial and reputation damage to the customer. The cost of deploying Forcepoint is fractions of pennies compared to the potential financial impact of data loss.
  • There is some administrative overhead associated as false positives are inevitable, requiring a manual review and a potential loss of productivity.
