IBM Digital Analytics

IBM analytics has continued to improve upon the days of being the original core metrics. After using the updated version for quite some time, it has been great at providing the needed analytics to measure ROI and goal performance for our quarterly KPI's. It has resulted in a great increase in web engagements although we are a midsize company, smaller outfits may not need such an expensive option.

Microsoft Power BI

I would definately recommend [Microsoft] Power BI, its an amazing product, despite of the cons, the product is still remarkable and unique in the values that it provides. If you have scattered data left undiscovered, or need solid reporting and analytics, or even just simply want to impress your management with detailed, beautiful and organized reports that are automatically refreshed with fresh content, Power BI is absolutely the tool to go for.It can import data from an overwhelming amount of sources, such as Excel, SQL Server, Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, Sales Force, MySQL, Amazon Redshift and many others, and it allows you to quickly and easily build and publish beautiful reports that always impresses the executives and management.[Microsoft] Power BI is one of a few products that I would recommend to literally anyone who uses a computer, there is always a use case for Power BI, especially the desktop version, the moment you create your first report you realize how much time and effort it saves and how much insights it gives on your data, personally, Power BI is an essential part of my work and I truly enjoy building reports and gathering/transforming data using it.

Pros

IBM Digital Analytics

  • IBM Digital Analytics is a strong offering for retail eCommerce clients, based on the out-of-the-box metrics available around product views, items added and abandoned, as well as the ability to remarke to the individual user based on that information.
  • Fairly straight forward implementation compared to the other major tools
  • Visitor stitching - I feel the IBM Live Profile is very accurate at creating a full picture of an individual user and provides opportunities to create better messages to them.
  • Having IBM Support as a an immediate resource to clarify or troubleshoot any of the system features has been very beneficial as well

Microsoft Power BI

  • Using features like Power Query, which is in itself like a tool like Excel, you can clean and preview data before using it for analysis purposes. If you have used Excel in the past, Power Query will, for the most part, be a cakewalk for you.
  • The predominant feature one comes to Power BI is the ability to create automated formidable dashboards that everyone refers to before or during meetings to encourage and substantiate decision-making.
  • If required, based on specific data points, reports are triggered automatically to certain people as well.

Cons

IBM Digital Analytics

  • The user interface is dated and flash based which makes it very difficult to use on mobile. The visualizations and graphs are nice but hopefully they will move away from flash soon.
  • The custom reporting module, Explore, is powerful and the only place to entirely customize display columns and metrics but it is limited to a certain number of credits each month. Each month of data included in a report uses 1 report credit.
  • Inside the Digital Analytics interface you are limited in the number of one time and persistent segments you can create. One time segments must be within the last 93 days and the date range cannot exceed 35 days. Depending on the reporting request that comes up you may run into this limitation.

Microsoft Power BI

  • Since it's a complex system, need a technical team or administrator to manage.
  • I don't like being locked out. Make it easier to stay log[ged] in and not fill in password.
  • SSO login would be huge! This would save a lot of time and improve security.

With DA being part of the IBM portfolio you know it will benefit from the size and scale of what IBM has to offer. Whether it be acquisitions or the product roadmap you know IBM will want to ensure that DA is right at the top of the market

I think using Microsoft Power BI can be somewhat intimidating as you kind of get everything in one go and with lack of good tutorials or trainings within the system it could be difficult to navigate and that is probably a big limitations that doesn't allow more people to adopt the platform and thus improve their decision making.

As reports are templated, the system is pretty quick. Sometimes you have to wait a bit for a report to render. Or you might have to re-load the page. But there is no real issue here and the system is on par with other similar systems.

Overall, the level of support is very good and I would say it is a strong asset of the solution. However, you can sometimes feel that there is a difference of level among the support team.

Microsoft's support is great most times, they will respond fast and make everything to come to a solution. Also, the software is very well documented, so many times there is no need to contact the support because the documentation may have a solution right away

Online training is really great. One of the best assets that they have. Lots of great videos, pop quizzes at the end of each module. Fantastic. Other tools have similar features, but not as good.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Digital Analytics

Much of the work we did in IBM Digital Analytics could have been answered through Google Analytics, a much simpler, agile and FREE solution set. Not mention, given the vast number of Google Analytics USERS, free and actionable support is simply a click away ... this compared to IBM Digital Analytics fractured and often absent support service.

Microsoft Power BI

[Microsoft] Power BI is practical and effective, like a hammer for a nail, it is easy to use and produces very quickly the results that in most cases are urgently required by clients (nice reports to share on the web). To start using [Microsoft] Power BI you need a business email address, with that you create an account in Power BI Service and in less than 1 hour you will have installed Power BI Desktop, a report will have been created and it will have been published on the web .

Return on Investment

IBM Digital Analytics

  • We spend too much time trying to work around bugs on the new UI.
  • We spend too much time trying to figure out how to make certain segments work because support and the knowledge center are lackluster.
  • Our sales rep is very unresponsive and leaves us searching for a lot of answers on our own, including what other products we may benefit from that IBM offers.

Microsoft Power BI

  • It helps us track and achieve company goals.
  • It shows us [our] performance in areas we could not previously track and allows us to see and work on how to improve their performance.
  • Quick easy access for executives to use in helping teams and addressing issues.
