Microsoft Azure

This is just a fantastic platform for dipping your toes into new technologies or running parallel testing of tings like ETL’s and BI Tools. Storage is so cheap and you can switch things on and off at will to save costs. Even if you are a 1-server company just managing email and file storage, going virtual is simply the best option. We still have a few on-prem servers and old Oracle items that we are swiftly moving to eliminate because the cloud is just that much easier and cost effective.

SAP Cloud Platform

SAP Cloud Platform is great for the company that needs a one-stop-shop for their complete e2e solution. No more having to maintain multiple applications separately. This is good for the company that needs to unify their solutions under one umbrella and allow the seamless bi-directional flow of data from start to finish. SAP Cloud Platform is not for everyone. Those smaller companies that may not have the budget or may not have the complexity of applications may not benefit as much as larger companies with a much larger footprint.

Cons

Microsoft Azure

  • Microsoft Azure's movement into machine learning and other advanced analytics are somewhat behind the curve. Other tools that have been doing this for a long time have set up easier user interfaces.
  • Azure seems to run slower than other big data housing tools. I think this might be because of Microsoft's attempt to make Azure more user-friendly.
  • I think Azure could improve its product by making it even more like Microsoft Excel. I know that's not what Azure if for, but hey, it's Microsoft, they could make it more spreadsheet-ish.

SAP Cloud Platform

  • More documentation and steps/blogs on how to perform security configurations.
  • Easy mapping with LDAP users and SAP users.

As I have mentioned before the issue with my Oracle Mismatch Version issues that have put a delay on moving one of my platforms will justify my 7 rating.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Azure

Google Cloud has a selection of products that are specific to machine-learning, but they are better for more specific use-cases like Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and other APIs. For our company, we were looking for APIs and cloud products that had a bit more flexibility in their interface, which is something that Azure offered for more of their products.

SAP PI. SAP CPI/HCI is more adaptable.

Return on Investment

Microsoft Azure

  • Positive -- Offloading specific ML-related tasks like Azure Machine Learning Studio was great for optimizing our general compute instances infrastructure.
  • Negative -- Difficult to onboard and poor documentation, integrating some of the Azure products took significantly more time than necessary.
  • Positive -- The pricing for some of the Azure products is quite competitive at greater usage.

  • The go-to-market is faster, and hence there's customer satisfaction.
  • Easy to use and requires less effort.
