PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain)

When used as a backup target PowerProtect DD models offer incredible density and can efficiently replicate to another cloud-based or offsite unit. Most complaints about these have been addressed in software over the years and they are now a intuitive and easily managed backup system. You are not buying a Swiss army knife, you are getting a machine designed for a purpose, use it for that and you will not be disappointed. While they have the ability to serve as a CIFS server, they are not a filer and lack many of the features inherent to filers and are a poor substitute.

Veeam Backup & Replication

I am very satisfied with Veeam for my backup needs. It does a great job at handling backups from workstations to a central backup server, and has good flexibility for virtual machine and network folder backups. Once set up, it has been very maintenance-free and has caused no problems so far. All of the data recoveries I have attempted have been successful so far as well. Overall, it just works as described and is a great enterprise-level backup solution for Windows workstations and servers.

Pros

PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain)

  • It writes backups quickly. DDBoost add-on is very useful as well for improving backup speeds.
  • DD is very efficient in its use of capacity. It dedupes and compresses very well.
  • It spans to large capacity amounts.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Creates a working VM copy of your VM servers
  • Backup and replications are very quick once you have run it the first time. I replicated new servers that had a 127GB drive in less than 15 min because it only backs up the data, not the entire drive.
  • If a backup or replication fails, you can set it to try again and that usually works. I have most of the mine set to retry 3 times.
  • If there is a problem like a backup failed it will email you so you don't have to babysit it.

Cons

PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain)

  • It can be expensive to implement, especially when used in conjunction with other applications/hardware such as Avamar.
  • The TCO can be high, especially when it needs its storage expanded.
  • Recovery speeds can be slow (compared to other solutions) for when recovery is time sensitive.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Not easy to find on the homepage.
  • It's very hard to find prices, which is a big deterrent to me as a buyer.
  • High barrier to entry for prices for very small companies. I'd rather pay than use the free option, but it's prohibitively expensive for me as a 1-person company.

DD has performed flawlessly for almost 10 years as our backup/recovery storage with offsite replication. Given its track record and great support from EMC, we're unlikely to look elsewhere any time soon.

I really have no complaints about Veeam Backup & Replication. Their service has been excellent and the cost is minimal in comparison to other services I checked out. Implementation wasn't simple and the Veeam Support team was there to help each step of the way.

The Veeam Backup & Replication solution is up and running every time you need it as it was planned. In more than 3 years that we have been using the product every night, it might have failed or presented an error once or twice, so the availability percentage is almost at 100%.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

Customer support has had some ups and downs here. We've had several issues with EMC support before and during the acquisition by Dell, but in the last 18 months support has been top notch. Quick and knowledgeable help is but a chat away, or they will call you back so you don't have to wait on hold. The team supporting us is responsive and is quick to assist with any request or issue.

Support response can be slow and sometimes tedious if you have a non-generic issue in your environment. Due to my experience with Veeam, I often discover the solutions before support does, but on the rare occasion where I need a higher tier of support, their experience and skill set are excellent. If you truly find something odd in your environment, Veeam Support, Development and their teams of engineers will figure it out and provide custom hot-fixes when necessary.

(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform")Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Alternatives Considered

PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain)

We selected Data Domain due to its integration with our backup software. The Data Domain works well for what we need it to do.

Veeam Backup & Replication

We used Zerto and CA Arcserve to address these needs without migrating to Veeam Backup & Replication. Zerto is a very successful instant backup and we are still using it now. It does what Veeam application cannot do in instant replication. CA Arcserve, on the other hand, is clearly lagging behind the Veeam Backup & Replication product and does not meet today's requirements.

Scalability can be addressed in many ways, but there is a consequence:
Higher performance and smaller backup windows may put too much stress on
production storage, and therefore, on its performance and Availability
to production workloads. To reduce stress on production storage, version
9.5 introduces a new way of reading VM disks that is optimized for
enterprise storage.

Return on Investment

PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain)

  • We were able to immediately discontinue our remote tape storage and TBU maintenance.
  • Reduced backup footprint in the data center.
  • It is costly to expand so buy it with a purpose.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • In a business model were one have several deployment types, e.g. acceptance, production, load tests, with recurrent new releases to deploy, or software development environments based on VDI, with developers constantly experimenting tools or testing their development, in case of disaster, rebuild the infrastructure may take a lot of time with significant losses if a quick restore of a healthy environment is not possible.
  • Organizations vulnerable to ransomware might find a huge burden to rebuild a whole infrastructure if backup policies and tools are missing.
  • To Public sector ought to provide access to public data or archives, backup/restore and disaster recovery capabilities is paramount and the lack of according tools and policies may lead to unrecoverable losses.
