Tenfold

Tenfold is ideal for offices or businesses with large call volumes. The tracking features and tools for productivity analysis make it a winner for groups, teams, and even individual productivity. On the other hand, single owner/operator, making just a handful of outbound calls a day might not find the features and benefits quite as valuable, and perhaps there are other 'click-to-dial' solutions that would work as well.

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Email Suited is great for businesses who send a lot of emails out on a regular basis, who have to manage many different distributions or email subscriptions, and who are looking for help managing audiences and automating responses. It might be less suited for an organization that does not use email communication or who just sends out 1-2 emails per week.

Pros

  • "Click-To-Dial' feature is a huge time saver.
  • Integration into (CRM) Salesforce prevents duplication of work.
  • Tracking and monitoring of all calls, allows quick analysis of team and individual productivity.

  • It is very scalable from a developer's view. The proprietary AMPscripting is very powerful in allowing developers to leverage most of platform programmatically which most providers are lacking. I believe that is the one key component making the Salesforce Marketing Cloud superior to others.
  • Data Segmentation via SQL. Most applications I have seen require you to use their interface to build your queries within the GUI. However, SF MC allows you to leverage SQL to access pretty much all of the Data points via Data Extensions and Data Views. Data Extensions are equivalent to database tables that the user can control and the "Data Views" are system databases that contain all of the Salesforce behavioral data such as bounces, send, clicks, opens, etc. You can write powerful queries that can leverage all of them to segment in real time if you want.
  • Powerful API. We are leveraging their API to hook in several of our company systems to process triggers, imports and other applications. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of how you would create different applications depending on what outcome you are looking for.
  • Templates are great as you can leverage regular HTML and AMPscript to create complex solution as I have done. I built a template system that allows to be used across 40+ different newsletters using only 1 master template that will conform according to the "newsletter type" and populate all of it components that a non-tech users selects. The data is also being called in via AMPScript. There are a lot of options.
  • Microsites which can be used for many things. I built a content generator that leverages many of the Salesforce MC components. The tool allows editor to enter newsletter data, manipulate, preview and submit which will then will be processed to output the final rendered email for deployment. It allows the use of many scripting language like JS, Jquery, AJAX, etc.

Cons

  • Outbound Calls made by Tenfold get automatically logged into Salesforce as their own individual tasks (as OBC (for Outbound Call)), however, these Tasks cannot be titled from Tenfold (e.g. "Following up on a proposal"). Similarly calls using Tenfold always creates a new task, making tasks previously created (e.g. "Call to make first contact"), either act as (mostly irrelevant) placeholders, or tasks that still require editing to make call notes, (defeating the value of the Tenfold on-call, note-taking feature).
  • When notes are entered into Tenfold, they can be instantly logged into the notes field of the Salesforce Task, however, if the note is longer than the 'Notes' field, this gets transferred to the 'Comments' section of the Task, with no indication that this is where it went. As such call notes can occasionally appear to have not been taken, have gone missing, or just take longer to find.
  • Occasionally 'click-to-dial' does not work on all numbers you might find in a browser window, and at times the Chrome Extension needs to be reset to get things up and running.
  • Tenfold's app doesn't automatically connect the call/task at the Opportunity level within Salesforce, which is where we do the majority of our activity. Instead it requires an extra step on every call.

  • Customer Service. It took quite some time to find a support "partner". Overall Salesforce account management and service is not the greatest. Not sure if it is due to their rapid growth or sheer arrogance. I now have found someone that is great from a support level but it took about 2 years and during that time we had many "hard meetings" to address our issues.
  • When using SQL one of the pain points is that you have to output everything into a Data Extension which has to be built before you can run the queries, you can't connect a 3rd party tool like Navicat, RazorSQL to get outputs while you are writing queries. So it can be a daunting task especially when you are building complex campaigns and need to see results immediately.
  • Copying certain components like Data Extensions. Sometimes you may want to repurpose data but you can't just copy a data extension, you have to build it again. You can copy structure but not data, and there is no tool for it. The same for business units, we use a production and testing business unit. We build applications in the testing bu but then have to manually recreate everything in production.

They also perform annual reviews in person that provides us with market trends, new tools and features, performance metrics, and new content recommendations. We evaluate this by local market and at the international level

I think the tool is easy to use, protects a company from the spam legislation and manages subscribers very well. It is simple to create a non-complex email. I like the survey function on the email tool as well. Overall usability is quite easy and no necessary to have an IT background or extensive knowledge to use. It is helpful, though, to have an understanding of HTML for formatting at this point.

Upgrades and timing of the upgrades were communicated well and planned during off hours for our work. If we did have a campaign scheduled during that time, it would kick-off after the system was back active. There were a few unplanned system down times, but it was a rare occurrence and those times were also short in duration.

Exact Target performs well and is relatively easy to learn. It handles subscriber management well, and is easy to organize lists and segregation of those subscribers. Emails are easy to classify and group together for re-use or resending to different demographics of the recipients. The product is reliable, and metrics of the campaign results are easy to obtain and interpret.

Support from ExactTarget is very responsive and helpful. The follow-up is timely and the online help actually answered most of my questions and gave information that I needed without having to file an actual help ticket with the support desk. It is also nice to be able to email or CALL (with real people) for support, when needed.

Easy to implement, with simple emails and solutions initially created. More advanced usage of the tool and more advanced subscriber attribute usage was implemented during later phases when the knowledge of the tool increased. Monitoring success and results of email campaigns were done at a high level initially, but not fully used until the tool and email marketing as a whole was better understood in the corporation.

Alternatives Considered

In fairness, this product was rolled out to our entire team, and therefore I have not used other (similar) call tracking software. That said, I have been very pleased with all of the features it does offer, and would be reluctant to change products based on the successes in productivity we've experienced with Tenfold. If anything, we would hope to continue to see improvements in this product, rather than switching to something else

Constant Contact is better for campaigns tied to events, but is MUCH less complex, and that quickly becomes a problem. ET IMT is great for anything more complex, and for any mid-size or above business. It also allows straight HTML and dynamically-coded emails, whereas the template system in Constant Contact quickly belies the fact that it is old and rigid.

We had approximately 20,000 recipients of most email campaigns, with some higher amounts and some smaller campaigns. The tools is easy to use and the recipient list size is really not a factor in the complexity or work to create and email campaign. Our campaigns could just have easily been sent to many more people, with virtually no additional work.
