Great Database for Cost Management/Accounting

We primarily use CMiC Construction Platform for budget and cost management on the project side and particularly value how those modules are linked with accounting. Basically everyone in the office uses it for those two overarching purposes. I know for the PMs, we use it to generate subcontracts and change orders, pay applications, and project forecasting. Field staff is limited to invoice approvals and daily reports.
  • Direct link between project management and accounting
  • Report functions (subcontracts, change orders, pay apps, etc.)
  • Cost Status Query provides excellent overview of projects
Cons
  • Cost & accounting are great, but other PM functions are lacking (document controls, daily reports, etc)
  • Last I checked the mobile app isn't there yet
Cost and accounting are great for the CMiC Construction Platform. Other project management functions are not so great. It could be more user friendly.

Great for cost tracking: Less great for project management

We use CMIC to integrate our accounting and construction management operations.
  • Tracks contracts and change orders.
  • Tracks owner changer orders.
  • Supports monthly billing using AIA type documents.
Cons
  • The platform is large so operation is pretty slow.
  • Field management (daily reports, material tracking) is a little bulky and hard to use.
  • Invoicing can be a little glitchy.
The CMiC Construction platform works well for tracking costs and financials. It makes job buyout relatively easy. It does not work as well with field management. The daily report module is not particularly user-friendly for field personnel.

Some efficiency, but cumbersome and hard to use.

It's being used to track financials for construction projects. It's used by everyone in the company from managers, to accountants, to admin staff, to risk management. It solves any disconnect issues since it keeps all the information in one place. It also tracks the issues happening on site with the financials.
  • It creates more efficiency by not having to go into several programs for the same information.
  • It ensures accuracy by making everyone work in the same program.
  • You can easily drill down into different locations to access the history of things throughout a project no matter what your role is.
Cons
  • The program is very cumbersome and not user friendly. The interface isn't like other interfaces and takes a lot of training to understand.
  • There are many many many categories in some of the financials which can create confusion for different roles on the project.
  • It's hard to use. You can't flip between different screens or you'll lose your place and have to start from the beginning again.
It is well suited for tracking multiple things in one place. In the case I use it, I do recommend it on a theory level for linking financial events to tangible building events. When anyone on the project team brings up an issue, it can be tracked from meeting minutes to RFI or submittal to potential change to change in both subcontractor and owner contract values.

We use CMiC for our project management, financials, and payroll. CMiC helps us manage all the subcontracts/AP in one system, which along with payroll data is used for Jjb billing. Costing, AP, and payroll flow right into Job billing. We also do union payroll which CMiC handles very well.
  • Payroll.
  • Financials.
  • Job costing.
  • Job billing.
Cons
  • More robust safety module.
  • Flexible checklist with QR codes.
  • BI that is easier to use for users.
CMiC is strong in financials. If used for a job, billing with payroll works very well.

Useful but has room for improvement

We use CMiC to manage real estate multifamily development projects. We highly rely on job cost tracking, invoice approval, and bill package functionalities to improve our efficiencies and recordkeeping. The system does have a learning curve but it has been very helpful overall considering we previously used QuickBooks to track everything.
  • Invoice approval.
  • Spent to date detail.
  • Draw package for lender.
  • Track subcontracts
Cons
  • Not very user-friendly.
  • Glitches often.
  • Financial reports
Very well-suited for construction, not so great for managing complex capital structure.
