Planful is NOT painful

Planful is so easy to manipulate. Even when we have new money managers request access, it takes very little training to run through their responsibilities in the program and how to utilize all of the tools they need. I've stated it before, the improvements over the years have been impeccable, continually getting better and easier to use.

Our money managers have some challenges navigating the tool when they aren't in it for awhile. But they can view their cost centers with ease and pull our standard reports and create off those as needed. I have monthly variance meetings with our money managers where we discuss their previous month’s budget vs their actuals making sure they are accurately forecasting their cost. Then we review their HR templates for people changes (pay rates, transfers, new hires, terminations, etc). We’ve streamlined processes by having it all in one system and it is updated in real time.

I'd say for 90% of my user-base, it's very easy for them to create their own ad hoc reporting for analysis. I do have at least one user that tends to need additional assistance with any report changes that aren't simple dimension changes. Also, I frequently get very specific/complex reporting questions, too.

Once trained and familiar with the tools, Planful is a very user friendly application. However, change is required when implementing a new tool, and we have found some resistance within our organization to embrace it. Those of us that are using it don't go a day without its assistance. If I were to do it again, I would ensure that all departments were involved in the implementation, so that they could value behind it.

Reporting is very simple. Dynamic reporting allows for any user to perform thousands of different ad hoc reporting. Planning is way better than relying on a Excel spreadsheet.

Planful is primarily used each month by our Accounting department. However, certain templates are opened up [by] the department managers for budgeting and it is very user-friendly for those who only do this annual exercise.

Planful is designed to be a self-serve application. Users are easily able to build and save their own reports with individual folders, as well as run and modify reports built specifically for them. In addition to our finance and accounting teams, Planful is also used by department leaders, operations team members, and external business partners.

The planning module is very simple to work with; you can copy and paste easily from other sources. I think it needs more ways to change the template and options like other budgets/forecasts figures in the same template to [easily compare] the changes that you are proposing through the scenarios already included in Planful. This is possible in the Reports module but there is no way to check in the Planning Module.

For anyone in the Finance and Accounting world, it is easy to complete self-serve reporting, analytics, and planning in Planful. Once in a while if I get stumped, I reach out to our Planful admin to assist with updating reports or updating the hierarchy to reflect org structure changes. I would recommend Planful to finance folks.

Financial professionals will find reporting easy with Planful. Planning is also easy, though depends on how you've set the system up (i.e you can make it easy and simple using Structured Planning, or you can make it super complicated with Dynamic Planning/Spotlight)

Self-service reporting is very easy for both financial professional and non-financial professionals. Access is controlled through the security functions. There are features included to allow easy filtering depending on user access and role. Spotlight is also essential to allow for quick access to standardized reports directly through Excel without having to access the web application.

I can basically get anything that I need out of Planful [(formerly Host Analytics)]. We previously used an outside consultant to provide support hours for us, but I've gotten so good with Planful that we barely use them anymore and will have them focus more on implementing the dynamic planning and dashboard modules.
