Db2 Warehouse on cloud

Overall Satisfaction with Db2

When we initially looked at Db2 the use case to drive adoption was geared towards control of large scale unstructured data which was sourced from many different sources integration methods. From that initial scope, you can image the workload and compute problems that you have in just extracting, loading, and running data quality processes on that data even before beginning to start to refine and curate for many different presentation layers. Db2 offers a wide range of integration support, has the agility to handle large scale enterprise workloads, and most import offers the flexibility of cloud compatibility.
  • Query optimization capabilities - algorithms drive analysis and optimization execution plans for basic to complicated complex queries
  • Security built with data design in mind - encryption, access controls, and auditing are fully baked in ready to use amongst many other security features
  • Disaster recovery and availability - replication, automatic failover, and failure secondary copy mode for critical workloads and increased uptime
  • Learning curve for DB resources - Improvements to UI or native command line built-ins can help with increasing efficiencies for DB resources
  • Better resource utilization monitoring and recommendations
  • Continue to adopt support for modern frameworks and languages making it easier for organizations to see making Db2 the easy first choice
  • Db2 has helped align and centralize our data governance program and approach enterprise wide
  • Advanced query management has helped with controlled compute runtime, workload management, and SLAs
  • Allowed us to achieve an increase in workload uptime for services, and improved our disaster recovery execution reducing time spent being down during an outage
It was important for us to have independent cluster workloads for compliance reasons and as well for performant processing. One thing we quickly notice was that the support for partitioning meant less inclusion within our coded frameworks, and the addition of parallel processing is what really we found separated Db2 from the rest. The way it divided workloads and even allowed for node isolation was a great benefit in driving value of performant processing.
I don’t think that I ran into any downtime issues but what I can say is that the two features high availability disaster recovery and transparent app failover drive an environment where impact to downtime is definitely minimized. The application failover focuses on the application services layer and provides that second layer of redundancy for an application.
With the other two mentioned above, I needed to have processes and frameworks that executed outside of the environment driving DB management operations. Yes, these are completely different solutions; however, the support you get for framework, library, and language support allows for runtime at a different layer than with other solutions.

Do you think Db2 delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Db2's feature set?

Yes

Did Db2 live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Db2 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Db2 again?

Yes

I could think of a couple but the obvious is in Fintech and Retail, because of the amount of transactional and event level data for global operations. It is imperative to have a solution that can handle such large scale date, in real-time and batch delivery for inbound and outbound delivery, and ultimately ensuring that workload management is supported in some cases for around the clock SLAs.

Using Db2

40 - The teams that primarily use Db2 functionality are E-commerce Data Analysis, Data Engineering, Data Science, and Enterprise Data Management. However, there is broad use of query services against the data warehouse services across the enterprise that support services for Web, Native App, Recomendation Engine, and various AI use cases like Conversational AI and Computer Vision data points.
10 - In general we have a bit of overlap in resource skill set from different departments, but the core group is made up of systems engineers, DBAs, Data Engineers and Analysts, App Developers, Disaster Recovery staff which would include those responsible for system uptime and restoration of services, and product management resources.
Db2 for the most part gives us a reliable and stable enterprise platform for storing, organizing, and managing data which drives our Master Data Management circle of excellence. By effectively structuring and storing data, various department lanes are able to improve data quality, accessibility, and reliability with a focus on data completeness and uptime. This has lead to better decision-making, improved operations, and quicker time to market of product deployments and prototypes.
Db2 is pretty much cloud agnostic and has numerous support areas for assistance with migration to cloud services. It simply gives you the necessary tools and services to assist with migrating their on-premises projects to the cloud. This also includes vast support for schema conversion, data migration, and application modernization.
  • Integration of data services for our Conversational AI products
  • Data frameworks that are location based driven for CPG projects
  • Risk management solutions for predictive legal case avoidance
When I think of our workload management automation processes, Db2 has helped improve efficiencies and helps us drive process experience. Workload automation has been a means for us to dynamically allocate resources and automate processing based on workload demands which in turn ensures that resources are efficiently utilized and allocated for those routines when they need it most. By automating a priority schedule for workloads based on a defined criteria that includes at a minimum deadlines resource availability. We have increased automation processes and at the same time improved overall system performance and health.
  • Event driven transaction processing
  • Analytics and reporting workload decision making support
  • Security data management at scale
For the most part because of the platform's reliability and maturity of the features it provides. Plus the product offers support and updates in a timely manner, and when you couple that with high availability and disaster recovery features then you have a product that really helps an organization drive continuous operation of critical business services.
