Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We get a lot of different files from different partners/vendors. We also have multiple databases that all need to be centralized. We use Matillion to read in the data from these different files and databases into a DataLake. That datalake then serves the rest of our company from reporting to billing.

Matillion has allowed us to feed our datalake, and give everyone with reporting needs access.
Matillion allows us to setup a feed one time and then just schedule it to continually run multiple times a day
It is easy to use and understand so different people and different departments are able to pick it up and understand it - thus spreading out the workload.

Usability

I do love the low code feature. It's easy for anyone to follow the flow. There are some file formats that are more complicated and do require a bit of python programming to implement them though. However, having the option to write some code to parse things is very beneficial.

Time to Value

IT took us a few weeks to get it deployed in a secure environment and get the Single Sign On working with it. After it was deployed correctly, it took no time at all to write the first transformation and get it scheduled. It is a very easy to use application.

Scalability

I have been able to connect Matillion to AWS Aurora Databases, MySQL databases, Rest APIs, Files in AWS S3, etc. Being able to load all of that disparate data into one datalake has made data mining and reporting a lot simpler. I wish everything could be implemented as easily as Matillion.

Alternatives Considered

Kylo

I tried to use several opensource tools before Matillion. They were not bad, but I spent a ton of time maintaining the system, and debugging why things wouldn't work. It also seemed like everything needed a hack to get it working properly. With Matillion, it just works outside of the box, and they have a lot of good documentation explaining how to set it up and use it.

Matillion is great any time ETL or ELT is needed. I've now used Matillion in 2 different companies and would have no problem recommending others to use it as well. The ease of setting up schedules to just take care of data imports and manipulation is incredible. IT has also been an incredible tool at bringing disparate databases together on a schedule so that I never have to think about it.
