Use Cases and Deployment Scope

DPM is used by our company as a primary backup solution for virtual machines, bare metal backups, file shares and some SQL databases. We have used it for more than 4 years for short-term backups. We got it as a part of Microsoft System Center Suite.

Clustered Hyper-V VM backup and restore.
Easy to have multiple restore points.
Can back up different workloads with the same solution.

Allow long-term backups to disks.
GUI could have improved performance.

It is possible to backup SQL databases, works pretty well, but sometimes needs consistency checks on backups to properly continue to backup databases. Easy to restore anything to production or to another location.
