Microsoft Visio - Journeyman Solution to Many Problems.
Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Visio
Visio works for us in a variety of ways, from handling organizational charts to developing process flow charts, office layouts, IT network diagramming, and complex relational database query visualization. Different departments use the product for different purposes, and it really does very nicely in handling a variety of user needs.
Pros
- Presenting visualizations of complex relational database queries.
- Deploying consistent and scalable organization charts that work well together.
- Visualizing IT networking hardware layouts and designs.
- Developing process flow charts with a clear decision, action, and variable outcome points and paths.
Cons
- The product is large and can be complex if one tries to "learn it all."
- Due to its size it sometimes bogs down with marginally powered computers.
- Consistent operation from template to template makes support easier.
- Flexibility in functionality is helpful.
- Visio recognizes that for 95% of users, the product provides at least 95% of the needed/desired functionality.
- The ROI on Visio is outstanding. We can train one person in the basics of the product, and because it works consistently from template to template, we can support users with a variety of needs.
- Most users are fine when using a combination of Visio and Excel for project management tasks. We don't need to spend the coin on as many licenses for the much more cumbersome (albeit much more capable) Microsoft Project. Deploying something that it quite literally clicks and drags, to begin with, and can become more complex as users grow in familiarity with the product, is cost and time efficient.
