Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Moodle is the LMS solution we use to provide training to several Mortgage companies. It is our e-learning delivery and tracking tool. We also resell branded installations to companies who do not have their own LMS.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Moodle tracks the actions of learners very well.
Moodle is extremely extensible with a large library of plugins available.
Moodle integrates with with other systems very well through the availability of an API and authentication plugins.
Moodle has a very flexible way of organizing course material allowing instructional designers to be creative.
Moodle can support any number of learning assets including SCORM, LTI, and online html pages.
Moodle integrates with several virtual classroom solutions including, WebEx, BigBlueButton, WizIQ, and VideoWhisper.

Cons

Learning Moodle is difficult for new users because the interface is not the most intuitive.
Moodle does not allow learning assets to be used in more than one course which leads to storing duplicate content from time to time.
Moodle does not allow courses to be assigned to multiple categories.
A list of completed courses are not available to be shown to students, teachers, or administrators. There is no easy way of seeing which enrolled courses a student has completed.
History is lost when a student is unenrolled from a course.

Return on Investment

An LMS can easily cost $50,000 or more. Moodle is open source making the software free to use and modify. Moodle providers can be found for as little as $100.00 a month.
Moodle can be branded allowing us to sell a dedicated branded solution at a premium.
We have developed several custom Moodle plugins that allows us to resell features that are not available in the standard package.

Alternatives Considered

Cornerstone OnDemand,Blackboard

I choose Moodle over the commercial alternatives because it is open source and already has more features. Some examples where Moodle outshines it's competitors are:

Likelihood to Recommend

Moodle is well suited for any company seeking an LMS. How Moodle is provided should be carefully considered. Several companies are available to host and support Moodle, if your company does not have a Moodle expert in-house.

I see you mentioned integration to virtual classrooms like WizIQ as a pro. However, I don't recommend using WizIQ with any other software or at all. I feel the reviews of WizIQ are misleading.

  Thanks for sharing your thoughts on WizIQ. Considering this was a review on Moodle maybe you'd like to share your experience with it. On the whole Moodle's ability to integration with virtual classroom solutions is a pro in my book. It is up to the implementer to choose which one works for them. Simply having that choice is also a pro.
