Overall Satisfaction with Portainer

We are using Portainer inside a VM running on a ProxMox cluster. Portainer helpes us to quickly deploy a feature rich Docker environment, running on our existing ProxMox virtualisation environment.

  • managing Docker via an intuitive webGUI
  • easily deploy new Docker containers
  • makes it easy to change config of containers
  • Lot's of features regarding network setup and functionality
  • option to enable multifactor authentication for login to Portainer GUI
  • more default application templates
  • Fast deployment
  • Easy to use
  • running very stable
  • It's maintenance doesn't need a lot of time
  • Portainer makes effective use of hardware ressources
  • Also the fast deployment and the easy extensibility helps you safe money
Portainer is much easier to use and it's deployment is faster than other solutions which you can run locally or on-prem in a datacenter.
Also Portainer is compatible with many different kinds of environments, where other solutions can only be used on some of the well-known cloud environments.
Portainer has out-of-the-box support for software defined networking and it's functionality is better than on some of the competitors solutions.
Moreover Portainer offers also a great value for it's price and it's not crazy overprized like many other solutions.

Do you think Portainer delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Portainer's feature set?

Yes

Did Portainer live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Portainer go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Portainer again?

Yes

Portainer can be used in very different scenarios. For example it can be used on a small homeserver to run infrastucture services like DNS, DHCP and a proxy service.
But you can also deploy Portainer in a datacenter and use it to manage large multi node Docker environments.
It's easy to use, so another scenario would be to use it for development and testing environments and enable developers to deploy containers on their own.
A less appropriate scenario in my oppion would be to use Portainer in an environment which has very high requirements on security. It's really not an easy task to harden a Portainer setup, however that's probably true for every container based virtualisation solution.

Evaluating Portainer and Competitors

  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
We needed a solution which is easy to setup and comes with a reasonable pricing.
Take more emphasis on security features like suported SSO protocols, support for multifactor auth or passwordless authentication.
