Overall Satisfaction with Sage Accounting

As a self employed person, cash flow is critical.

When you're busy it is easy to forget to invoice or to follow up with late payments. The Sage Dashboard has solved this for me.

I'm an engineer, not an accountant so having something that assists me, freeing up time so I can get on with the bread and butter stuff is a winner.

I would have allocated 10/10, but I had to do a little learning (I still am) through the excellent support offered; but it did slow me down in the first few months - mainly because I don't speak accountant!
Sage can seem daunting when you first open it, but even for a novice it is worth the effort for the benefits you get.
  • Traceability - where you are spending. I started with a spreadsheet which had a column for 'electronics & computing' this captured everything from monthly software subscriptions to hardware and from light bulbs to dash cams. Sage has helped me streamline the spending.
  • MTD - I am MTD compliant, although I do not need to be as my accountant is and they complete my HMRC submissions. It does mean that I have a contingency plan if I have to change this service.
  • Debtor's - It is easy to be a busy fool and not realise that accounts are overdue. For a small business, the restriction in cash flow due to late paying clients is a killer. The dashboard feature helps with this.
  • Terminology - I struggled as I do not speak 'accounting' so there was a steep learning curve for me. A prime example would be the Journal functionality, for me a Journal is a diary where notes are written. The addition of a '?' with a short description against titles would have quickened the process. Please note, this is due to me being self-employed, so I had no previous formal accounting training.
  • Template Flexibility - some more options with fonts and image input would be useful. As a business I use 2 fonts 'Candara' and 'Calibri'. Candara is used for titles, this includes the company name and company details. It is frustrating that the corporate styling is not transferable.
Sage is obviously well suited for larger SME's and large businesses. It is suitable for micro and macro businesses if you wish to make the effort to understand your business cash flow fully.
It also offers MTD compatibility which is beneficial if you are VAT registered in the UK, but if you just wish to record 'X' came in and 'Y' went out with a low turnover it is too much.
