Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is used as our primary backup and recovery device for all of our servers (physical/virtual VMware) across the entire organization. It is used for backup and recovery and addresses the issues of business continuity, disaster recovery, and protection from ransomware and malware. Backup jobs are scheduled to run hourly, daily, or weekly, depending on how critical it is to get the server backed up.

Has dedupe and compression abilities that maximize capacity usage

Better upload speed performance to the Unitrends Cloud offering
Faster software upgrade process and more stable software releases

Return on Investment

Cloud backup performance is pretty poor, which is why we decided not to renew it
I spend too much time messing around with the backup system, more so than with other backup and restore products that I have used in the past

Veeam Backup & Replication

I didn't choose Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery, and I wouldn't choose it on the next refresh. There are much better products that are easier to use.

In terms of pricing, Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery is fairly reasonably priced for an all-in-one backup and recovery platform. It is simple enough to use. You would probably get more bang for your buck rolling your own server and storage and running Veeam, but that would require staff time to build, manage, and maintain such a system.

Likelihood to Recommend

Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery works for the most part and is generally easy to use; performance is not great but gets the job done. The underlying platform can be finicky at times, but technical support is excellent. You usually get a North-America-based support person who's knowledgeable and helpful right away and can help you resolve your issue fairly quickly. I have confidence that my issue will be resolved in a timely manner every time I call in to support. However, a backup system should really be stable--set it and forget it--and not require the number of calls that I have had to make, given my environment is fairly small and not that complex.
