Overall Satisfaction with Veritas Backup Exec

Backup Exec is used by a division of my organization that encompasses approximately sixteen servers. We use Backup Exec to perform full and incremental backups of both physical and virtual servers in our environment, primarily file and print, email and SQL servers. It provides data protection and recovery via long restore horizons and short backup windows.
  • The license/agent deployment feature in Backup Exec facilitates effective and speedy population within your data center.
  • Veritas Backup Exec's feature rich job creation is intuitive and simplifies backup strategies.
  • Customizable views in the Administrator console allow you to view your backup environment to maximize visibility.
  • Could provide better license management from an inventory perspective. How many licenses do I have?.. etc.
  • When Backup Exec backs up itself it should not select iSCSI backup targets by default. The result is recursive data backup ending in the loss of storage capacity.
  • I'm struggling to come up with another con.
  • As a non-profit, we're satisfied with the pricing of Backup Exec's software and licensing.
  • We do not utilize Backup Exec's software maintenance option, and feel this hasn't diminished our experience with their product.
  • Overall, Backup Exec is a reliable solution for backup, recovery, and restoration. We've never required support from Veritas or had any patch or compatibility issues.
Essentially we chose Backup Exec because we were familiar with it's config and interface. Both Acronis and Arcserve provided the same or similar features, but came in at a higher price. We also looked at hosted backup services and found them extremely expensive. We adopted an Idealstor disk appliance, which came with their proprietary backup software, but found it lacking in features. We still use the appliance today as a backup target for Backup Exec.

Very well suited for small to medium organizations. The intuitive interface, plus straightforward job creation, make it ideal where expertise is at a premium. No special technical skills are required to configure and maintain the software. It's not so well suited for larger organizations where targets and resources number in the hundreds -- inasmuch as the licensing becomes cumbersome and complex.
