If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Dundas BI

We are basically a Microsoft SQL shop, and Dundas BI has been an excellent fit for our environment. Also, anyone just starting out with mapping will find it easy to use the map visualizations, right out of the box. It is easy to add multiple data series to a single map and produce sophisticated results. This has been a tremendous value add for our users

Pros

  • In terms of extensibility this is the best reporting platform we have seen. You can build very sophisticated reports with different data sources, and extend the basic functionality with javscript code
  • Securing the BI system is also a strength and the system can be configured relatively easily.
  • Reports can be available on mobile devices
  • Good Javascript embedding framework does not require the site to be built in java

  • Dundas BI, offers the ability to create Manual SQL statements, this is very good because the user is in full control of what data is visualized, the SQL statements are used to filter and create structures called Data Cubes. These Data Cubes then form the basis for the graphical statistical UI's.
  • Dundas has great support guys, they will assist you with good explanations, and when all else fails, they offer Citrix (webex) sessions, where you and one of their expert support staff share screens and they take hold of your mouse through remote access and help assist you with whatever the issue may be. I have always been helped by them, they are friendly, understanding and always willing to go the extra mile to assist their customers.
  • Dundas BI 2.5, is great because it runs in HTML, the HTML version allows users to embed the dashboard securely and easily.
  • BI runs using JavaScript scripts, they are easy to learn as well as powerful.

Cons

  • The report designer can be unstable at times.
  • The reporting engine tends to have memory leaks with certain types of massive-data reporting.
  • The report graphics don't have the sexiest appeal (e.g. Glossy feel, animated output)
  • Some extensibility is extremely difficult to get to without purchasing a license (e.g. Setting a simple flag so that HTML outputs in compressed mode requires either creating your own emitter or going the paid route)

  • Should provide installation support on Linux
  • Should provide detailed documentation regarding JavaScript API

Difficulty with some extensibility that should be fairly easy, lack of shading in the reports (even simple phong shading), lack of out-of-the box capabilities that seem like no brainers and instability with the design tools all drop the product a few marks, but the support community and the overall product experience is well above average. It's at least worth a try and its extensibility makes it a good contender

Breadth of Deployment

The design tool is useful for basic reporting, but many reports require some experience in SQL and JavaScript. Java programming, though not a required skill for basic reports, is needed for better reporting and to access the more advanced features (such as debugging).

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has been in the industry a while and the open source community make going with Actuate's BIRT a stable decision. Changing report engines can be expensive, so going with a company with a good reputation helps long-term
Bri Gipson profile photo
It is easy to develop and re-visualize the reports and the license is too less expensive compared to other tools which are overpriced.

Collaboration and Sharing

Engineers can share and collaborate building tasks - e.g. One develope builds the report design while another builds the query. But I can't pass in a requirements template from a spreadsheet to construct the report. Collaboration is still strongly based on comminication between stakeholders and engineers rather than through automation

It is easy to share the report output and we can even easily schedule the reports. There is one issue that needs to be fixed while exporting the data - it doesn't keep the timezone of the current browser. It changes to the server timezone in case you are displaying the timezone in your report. I think they have fixed this in upcoming versions.

Dundas BI has a variety of data sources available with ability to build data cubes that allow for ETL process in graphical way without the need to write SQL codes also it has unified data layer where it is easy (graphically) to merge tables regardless of their data sources.

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
