The service provision is good the accounts customer service is poor so I would struggle to give BC a better than average review, if only they could offer customers a better accounts service then the value would be much higher.

Pros

  • Probably one of the easiest e-commerce platforms to work in, it does take setup, but compared to a lot of other e-commerce solutions, this is probably the best one that I have seen that can be designed and implemented custom.
  • Their template system works very well and allows you to create and re-use templates across Adobe Business Catalyst.
  • Their pre-built modules are great, giving people a great way to use common web elements without having to use a plug-in or find some solution, it is simply built in and generally works exactly as you would expect.
  • Adobe Business Catalyst is more of an all-around solution, providing elements that most smaller companies would have a hard time figuring out, since it includes the ability to build websites, send and track e-mails, analytics. It really is a powerful tool that would typically require a fair amount of coding knowledge and expertise but with the system already built, it can be easily modified and edited by those with limited or no coding knowledge at all.

  • Modular capabilities in term of software development and solution. The use of .NET platform further enhanced its power.
  • Skin development relatively easy to make, however, some specific knowledge of DNN platform is required.
  • DNN store provides a fast amount of effective, value of money solution. Most of the time, purchasing from the store is more than enough.

Cons

  • Better drill down of the reports & analytics feature.
  • Better integration and clarity with the CRM (Customer Relations Management) section.
  • More selection of HTML5/CSS3 Responsive templates.

  • I really only have 2 complaints and they are minor with DNN. First I think that DNN might need to do a better job of certifying Developers that sell modules. Create a standard if you will, much like Apple does with Apps, as not all developers are created equally and support on some modules is lacking with some developers.
  • The second thing is I would like to see DNN keeping Developers more informed about upcoming changes to the platform and better co-ordination with developers on time schedules of new releases. Many times it seems the Developers have to play catch up when a new version is released and all of a sudden you may have some Modules that don't play nice with the changes.
  • Neither of these are really a major problem as DNN and the community has evolved tremendously over the years and it is fairly easy to find solutions from the community.

Likelihood to Renew

Adobe Business Catalyst9.4
Based on 10 answers
Actually with Business Catalyst there is no renewal; once you are a partner, you are a partner for as long as you like. It is an investment in your business not simply a product you purchase...and as an investment in partnership with Adobe, both are committed to each other's success.

We have no intention of switching to any other CMS platform because everything we are looking for in a good CMS platform DNN has. Affordability, flexibility, rapid application development, profitability, it runs on the Microsoft Windows ASP.Net Platform with SQL Server and then has the strength of thousands of resources.

Usability

Adobe Business Catalyst9.7
Based on 4 answers
Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

I have not found anything that was as user friendly and easy to use with tons of Community Support as well as Corporate Support like Training Videos, Forums, Blogs, Documentation, Wiki, Free CodePlex downloads, Free Modules and then the DNN Store that has thousands of Skins and Application Modules to accomplish everything you need.

Support

Adobe Business Catalyst8.6

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

You have available to you any type of Support you need or want, both paid and free from thousands of developers and consultants all over the world. You might even find some on Mars if you look hard enough. Also, with all of the available resources available from your Browser you can literally find the answer to any question you have in a matter of minutes.

I would never look back and question our decision to implement DNN not only as the Platform for our own use but also to use it to develop a complete turnkey system for our Clients worldwide. Everything you need is available and there is more expertise around the globe than you could ever imagine

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst has Web Apps which makes all the difference between them and competitors. Without that, BC would be behind many of the other CMS systems out there. Being a hosted system without any maintenance needs also puts it ahead of others. LightCMS is easier for clients to use, but not as customization and Evoq or DNN is over complex but a stronger platform..
John Reitz profile photo
I have also used the Ektron CMS software platform before switching to DNN. It is a good product but it is much more costly than DNN and the product has a steeper learning curve and no where near the resources available like the community support and most importantly the thousands of available Skins and Modules, almost everything had to be custom written with the Ektron CMS platform. But in fairness to Ektron they do have a lot of features already available in their product.

Return on Investment

  • Complete reporting connecting dollars spent on marketing to dollars earned as revenue
  • Faster turn-around on ideas into market-ready content
  • Better service to clients through greater usability in account management

  • The positive impact is that DNN is fast to deploy and extremely flexibly so we can provide any thing our Clients need in a very short period of time especially with all of the great tools and resources that are available to you. It is definitely a RAD Tool.
  • It helps us keep our cost down and our profits up in a tight economy and in a very competitive environment.
  • With DNN I have not found a negative to our ROI nor to our business goals. It only enhances our Goals and keeps us profitable.
