Adobe Business Catalyst

Adobe Business Catalyst is an absolute rock-star for companies that want an all in one solution, who have limited budgets and/or little technical expertise. It will scale well and can grow with your company. It is more complex and more flexible than something like Wix, where your options are heavily limited, but less open than WordPress where you can use plug-ins and custom code to rebuild how anything works. So it is a nice area in the middle.Adobe Business Catalyst would probably not be a great solution for companies who want absolute control over their website and everything in it and have highly experienced technical resources to build out whatever they need since not every area of the website or server can be modified.

DNN should be a consideration for an organizations using Windows and having developers proficient in Microsoft technologies, particularly C# .Net web-forms. However, there are alternative open-source CMS platforms, such as WordPress, that are more popular and, in my opinion, a better choice if the system will be hosted off-site or maintained by outside contractors

Pros

  • Probably one of the easiest e-commerce platforms to work in, it does take setup, but compared to a lot of other e-commerce solutions, this is probably the best one that I have seen that can be designed and implemented custom.
  • Their template system works very well and allows you to create and re-use templates across Adobe Business Catalyst.
  • Their pre-built modules are great, giving people a great way to use common web elements without having to use a plug-in or find some solution, it is simply built in and generally works exactly as you would expect.
  • Adobe Business Catalyst is more of an all-around solution, providing elements that most smaller companies would have a hard time figuring out, since it includes the ability to build websites, send and track e-mails, analytics. It really is a powerful tool that would typically require a fair amount of coding knowledge and expertise but with the system already built, it can be easily modified and edited by those with limited or no coding knowledge at all.

  • DNN is a feature-rich, open-source project with a flexible license. This let us use it without licensing costs for custom solutions or as-is with no custom code just plug-in modules.
  • DNN is written in Microsoft .NET C#. This allows our developers and our customers to use their existing skill set to install and maintain the solution.
  • DNN is made for Windows platform, allowing us and our customers to deploy solutions to existing Windows servers or in some cases hosted platforms.
  • DNN integrates with Windows authentication allowing us to deploy intranet solutions and use single sign-on for improved user experience and security.

Cons

  • They do not have the ability to create and build custom plug-ins for use on websites.
  • They do not support every payment gateway, they support the major ones, and most others, but if you have some very unusual payment gateway, it might not be supported.
  • The custom web apps were absolutely one of my favorite parts of this system, and it is really a shame that they do not allow them to be used on all tiers of the website, you have to get the web commerce tier to edit and use them.

  • DNN is developed with Microsoft Visual Studio, which is great if your developers already know and use it, but switching to it can be expensive in terms of licensing (for paid versions) and training costs.
  • DNN module creation is powerful for custom solutions but more complex, time consuming, and error prone than some other open-source solutions based on open-source scripting languages that can be edited without needing to be compiled.
  • DNN has a rich 3rd-party ecosystem of modules and themes but it pales in comparison to a CMS such as WordPress.
  • DNN's foundation on Microsoft technologies is a strength if you need it but a potential limitation if your organization is not entrenched in the Microsoft ecosystem. For example, a quick search on some freelancer sites shows that WordPress developers outnumber DNN developers 10 to 1.

The simplicity of this platform is the main reason. BC is incredibly easy for first time users and very streamlined for experienced users. I also look at the integration with other Adobe products in my company. Being able to stay completely in one piece of software (Muse or Dreamweaver) for a full design and publish make much better use of my time.

Usability

Overall it is a "plug and play" interface. The majority of the work is done in other software interfaces. Managing billing, user roles and custom reports are all that you need to manage in the actual BC user interface. For my business this is an incredible benefit as I have to leave my preferred software less.

I have not found anything that was as user friendly and easy to use with tons of Community Support as well as Corporate Support like Training Videos, Forums, Blogs, Documentation, Wiki, Free CodePlex downloads, Free Modules and then the DNN Store that has thousands of Skins and Application Modules to accomplish everything you need.

The support provided by Adobe is excellent. Though the knowledge base, forums, blogs and online chat questions most all answers can be found. In the event that you are unable to find an answer or you have a unique situation simply post a question to the forums. These forums are regularly monitored by Adobe and its users.

I would never look back and question our decision to implement DNN not only as the Platform for our own use but also to use it to develop a complete turnkey system for our Clients worldwide. Everything you need is available and there is more expertise around the globe than you could ever imagine

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Business Catalyst has Web Apps which makes all the difference between them and competitors. Without that, BC would be behind many of the other CMS systems out there. Being a hosted system without any maintenance needs also puts it ahead of others. LightCMS is easier for clients to use, but not as customization and Evoq or DNN is over complex but a stronger platform..

DNN and WordPress share many similarities and can be used for the most part interchangeably when the goal is to create a simple hosted website. However, in other cases the requirements dictate a very clear choice. If your organization is invested in the Microsoft ecosystem in terms of software and employee expertise then DNN is a superior choice. However if you will be relying on contractors for installation, development, and maintenance then WordPress' popularity means you will have more options.

Return on Investment

  • Complete reporting connecting dollars spent on marketing to dollars earned as revenue
  • Faster turn-around on ideas into market-ready content
  • Better service to clients through greater usability in account management

  • DNN has allowed us to decrease our development costs by using a solid CMS framework instead of having to develop one from scratch.
  • Using DNN has allowed us to leverage our development team's expertise with Microsoft technologies.
  • DNN allows us to use existing Windows infrastructure to deploy solutions without having to install and manage 3rd-party frameworks or add-ons.
  • DNN gives us fewer choices in themes, plug-ins, and contractors with specialized skills compared to some of the more popular CMS and blogging platforms. For example, we've had more luck finding graphic designers who can create custom WordPress themes than DNN skins.
