Adobe Connect

Adobe Connect is well suited for virtual conferencing for small groups of people or where actively sharing desktops or whiteboarding is not needed. Being in HR, using this for interviews and screening calls, it has proven to be useful. It may be less appropriate for large remote meetings where things could crash or bandwidth is really limited. Or if you really need a robust platform with tons of features and functionality.

MURAL (formerly Mural.ly)

Particularly suited for detailed collaboration with multiple aspects or steps to the conversation. Because there is a learning curve, it is less suited to simple topics such as a short document review or to capture a short conversation. It’s best suited to groups that are open to learning new technology.

Pros

Adobe Connect

  • Ability to set up multiple room layouts that "persist" indefinitely. This allows you to set up your room layout as far ahead of time as you'd like and/or re-use layouts over and over again.
  • Access to a wealth of add-ons (like clocks, timers, interactive word clouds, random participant selector, etc.), many of which are free.
  • A good variety of "pod" types -- different types of surveys, file shares, Q&A, whiteboard (with ability for participants to annotate), etc.
  • Multiple ways you can share your screen -- share your whole desktop, share just selected windows, or share just selected applications.
  • Ability to have multiple hosts for a meeting and to easily promote a participant to the Presenter or Host role on the fly.
  • Breakout rooms, ability to record meetings with options for computer and/or phone audio (including the ability link in external phone conference lines), engagement meters (which, I'll admit, I haven't really used), and, I think, pretty much all of the features that most similar platforms offer.
  • Ability to pause webcam, rather than having to stop it and restart it (and, when paused, it shows the last image it was displaying before you paused it).
  • For meeting recordings published to the Adobe server, provides a left-hand navigation pane that allows the viewer to jump to different parts of the recording, like each time the layout changes or to the point at which someone typed a particular chat message.
  • Ability to email the contents of the chat pods to yourself, both as a host and as a participant.

  • It allows you to build from independent work to group exercises and discussions and using brainstorming and the voting tool to drive decision making and action.
  • It has functionality that allows you to bring your audience to different areas of the whiteboard using the 'summon everyone' function, and move between delivering material with 'presentation mode' and interactive exercises where students contribute ideas or suggestions.
  • It offers an interactive and engaging platform for collaboration and costs can be kept low because people can join sessions as visitors.

Cons

Adobe Connect

  • There are some connectivity drops. This results in users having to log out and log back in. that generally solves it but multiple instances can lead to frustration.
  • A smoother interface would be a nice enhancement. maybe some of the windows could be hidden and brought up as hover over windows.
  • The backend CMS is easy enough to manage after you have worked in it for a while but there are a lot of root folders depending on your setup and it can be slightly clunky to navigate to where all your materials and content is.

MURAL (formerly Mural.ly)

  • People accidentally type over their own content.
  • Doesn’t work on phones/tablets.
  • Without guidance, participants will type over others notes.

The longer you use Adobe Connect, the longer you are likely to use it. Because you can build more and more resources over time, creating rooms that you re-use, recorded content you can repurpose, and tools that form the basis of ever increasing productivity, the more you use Connect, the more productive you become. Unlike competing products where, with every meeting you essentially start over -- setting up your resources for each meeting -- in my Connect rooms, I have highly tuned tools to accomplish my knowledge transfer goals. When I want to conduct another session - I send a link out to the appropriate room and instantly we are all focusing on getting a job done together. This ability of Adobe Connect to make you productive at an ever quickening rate is a competitive advantage

As sophisticated a product as Adobe Connect, the ease of use is outstanding. In my experience, even a user with very little knowledge of Adobe Connect can begin using and even leading sessions with very little training to get started with the basic features. Additional training is needed to become comfortable with the number of available features, but learning curve even for those is no steeper than would normally be expected from similar software.

I haven't had to use the support option very often, but when I have, I have had no problem with the level of service I need. I have spoken to others who have used support a lot more than me and they have experienced no issues as well. Overall, I would say I am happy with the service.

The ability to have most of the functionality of a full LMS at a fraction of the cost is huge. I can create manage and deploy both synchronous and asynchronous training based on the situation and all of my training is tracked through a series of easily created reports

Prices do not seem to vary much among resellers of the Adobe Connect hosted license; the only price variation you're likely to find are among the audio providers. When implementing, you may also wish to look into expanding the amount of storage you are allowed on the server to avoid any problems later on as your library of files starts to build up

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Connect

I prefer Adobe Connect's slide sharing and recording/playback features to either Zoom or GoToMeeting(GTM). GTM is good for meetings where the majority of the group is onsite and needs to conference in only a few remote participants, and Zoom is great for video chats. It's really a case of knowing your products and audience, and Adobe Connect has worked great for the majority of our team's needs.

Return on Investment

Adobe Connect

  • Provided a convenient space to bring people together for training and saved on resources to orchestrate training at a physical location.
  • Disappointed with flexibility and adaptability for use with different platforms such as iPhone, Android, etc.
  • Flexible pricing. There are cheaper options out there which is why I am currently exploring other tools for training.
  • Not as user friendly as I would like to figure out permissions, etc.
  • Availability of recordings for download for additional use is time consuming and inconvenient. To download, you need to replay the entire recording.

  • I have been able to continue my facilitation work.
  • It has improved my profile as a tech-savvy facilitator.
  • We have been able to have more efficient meetings.
